How to Use

Dosage

For adults and adolescents, the usual dose is 750 mg - 1500 mg two, three, or four times a day; for children, the dose is 30-100 mg per kg of body weight per day divided into 2-4 doses.

Method

A doctor or nurse usually gives this medicine as a drip (infusion) into a vein or as an injection into a vein or muscle.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 6 grams per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site or along a vein.
  • Changes in liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests).
  • Changes in white blood cell counts (neutropenia or eosinophilia) (seen in blood tests).
  • Decrease in red blood cells (anemia) (seen in blood tests).
RARE
  • Rash, itchy bumpy rash (hives).
  • Diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain.
  • Decrease in white blood cells (leukopenia) (seen in blood tests).
  • Increased bilirubin levels (a substance produced by the liver) (seen in blood tests).
  • Positive Coombs test (seen in blood tests).
  • Fever.
  • Allergic reactions (less severe).
  • Inflammation of kidneys and blood vessels.
  • Red blood cells breaking down too quickly (hemolytic anemia).
  • Decreased platelet count (trombocytopenia) (seen in blood tests).
  • Increased urea nitrogen and serum creatinine in blood (seen in blood tests).
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face or mouth and difficulty breathing.
  • Skin rash with blisters or small target-like spots.
  • Widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin.
  • Widespread rash, high body temperature, and swollen lymph nodes.
  • Chest pain during allergic reactions.
  • Fungal infections (e.g., thrush), especially with long-term use.
  • Severe diarrhea, often with blood and mucus, stomach pain, and fever. Contact your doctor immediately if these occur.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to cefalosporins or other similar antibiotics (like penicillins).
  • Do not use if you have ever had a severe rash, peeling skin, or blistering after taking this or any other cefalosporin.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to lidocaine and are to receive cefuroxime as an injection into a muscle mixed with lidocaine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to other antibiotics, like penicillin, as you might also be allergic to cefuroxime.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop severe skin reactions such as peeling skin, blistering, large rashes, or fever and swollen lymph nodes.

  • This medicine may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills, so use condoms or another barrier method during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant before using this medicine.
  • Inform the person taking the sample if you are having blood or urine tests, as this medicine can affect the results.
