How to Use

Dosage

Newborns (0-3 weeks): 30-100 mg per kg of body weight daily, divided into 2-3 doses. Infants (over 3 weeks) and children under 40 kg: 30-100 mg per kg of body weight daily, divided into 3-4 doses. Adults and adolescents (40 kg and above): 750 mg to 1.5 g two, three, or four times daily.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give this medicine as a drip into a vein (infusion) or as an injection into a vein or muscle.

Important

The highest daily dose is 6 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain, swelling, or redness around where the injection was given.
RARE
  • Skin rash, itchy bumps on the skin (hives).
  • Diarrhea, feeling sick to your stomach (nausea), or stomach pain.
  • Fungal infections, such as thrush, especially if you use the medicine for a long time.
  • Severe diarrhea, sometimes with blood or mucus, stomach pain, and fever (colitis).
  • Fever.
  • Inflammation of the kidneys or blood vessels.
  • Red blood cells breaking down too quickly (hemolytic anemia).
  • Skin rash with blisters that look like small targets (erythema multiforme), with a dark spot in the middle, a lighter ring around it, and a dark outer ring.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to cefuroxime, other similar antibiotics (cephalosporins), or any other ingredients. Also, do not take it if you have had a severe allergic reaction to other penicillin-like antibiotics or severe skin rashes after taking any cephalosporin.
  • If you get severe skin rashes, blisters, or skin peeling, seek medical help right away. These can be signs of very serious conditions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
  • This medicine can make birth control pills less effective. Use an extra birth control method, like a condom, during treatment.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel unwell, as this medicine might affect your ability to concentrate.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you are having blood or urine tests, as this medicine can change the results of some sugar tests and the Coombs test.

  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney problems, as your dose might need to be adjusted.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, including those bought without a prescription. Some medicines, like other antibiotics (aminoglycosides), water pills (diuretics), probenecid, and blood thinners, can affect how Cefuroxim Navamedic works.
