How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide your dose based on your age, weight, and infection. Typically, for adults, it's 750 mg to 1500 mg two, three, or four times a day. For children, it's 30-100 mg per kilogram of body weight, divided into 2-4 doses per day.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as a drip (infusion) into a vein or as an injection into a vein or muscle.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 6 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain, swelling, or redness where the injection was given.
  • Increased liver enzymes shown in blood tests.
  • Changes in white blood cell count (fewer white blood cells called neutrophils or eosinophils).
  • Fewer red blood cells (anemia).
RARE
  • Skin rash, itchy bumps (hives).
  • Diarrhea, feeling sick (nausea), stomach pain.
  • Fewer white blood cells (leukopenia) in blood tests.
  • Increased bilirubin levels in blood tests (a substance made by the liver).
  • A positive Coombs test (a blood test).
  • Fungal infections (like thrush), especially with long-term use.
  • Fever.
  • Severe diarrhea with blood or mucus, stomach pain, and fever (colitis).
  • Inflammation of the kidneys or blood vessels.
  • Red blood cells breaking down too quickly (hemolytic anemia).
  • Skin rash with blisters that look like small targets (dark spot in the middle, lighter area around it, and a dark ring on the edge).
  • Fewer platelets (cells that help blood clot) in blood tests (thrombocytopenia).
  • Increased levels of urea nitrogen and creatinine in blood tests (related to kidney function).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to cefuroxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or other beta-lactam antibiotics (like penicillin).
  • Seek medical help right away if you develop a severe skin rash, blistering, or peeling skin, especially with fever or mouth sores.
  • This medicine can affect some blood and urine tests, including sugar tests and the Coombs test. Tell your doctor or nurse if you are having tests done.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially other antibiotics (aminoglycosides), water pills (diuretics), probenecid, or blood thinners. They might need to check your kidney function more closely.
  • This medicine may make birth control pills less effective. Use another form of birth control, like condoms, while taking this medicine.

  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel unwell, as this medicine may affect your ability to concentrate.
  • This medicine contains sodium, which is important to consider if you are on a low-salt diet.
