How to Use

Dosage

For newborns (0-3 weeks), 30-100 mg per kg of body weight daily, divided into 2 or 3 doses. For infants (over 3 weeks) and children, 30-100 mg per kg of body weight daily, divided into 3 or 4 doses. For adults and adolescents, 750 mg to 1.5 g two, three or four times daily.

Method

This medication is usually given by a doctor or nurse as a drip (intravenous infusion) or an injection directly into a vein or muscle.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 6 g.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain, swelling, and redness around the injection site.
  • Increased levels of liver enzymes in blood tests.
  • Changes in white blood cell counts (decrease in neutrophils or increase in eosinophils).
  • Reduced red blood cells (anemia).
RARE
  • Skin rash, itchy bumpy rash (hives).
  • Diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain.
  • Decreased white blood cells (leukopenia).
  • Increased bilirubin (a substance produced by the liver).
  • Positive Coombs' test (a type of blood test).
  • Severe allergic reaction with raised, itchy rash, swelling, sometimes swelling of the face or mouth causing difficulty breathing.
  • Skin rash with blisters that look like small targets (dark spot in the middle, surrounded by a paler area, with a dark ring around the edge).
  • Widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin (possible signs of Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Widespread rash, high body temperature, and swollen lymph nodes (DRESS syndrome).
  • Fungal infections, caused by an overgrowth of yeast (Candida), which can lead to thrush.
  • Chest pain in connection with allergic reactions, which may be a symptom of an allergy-induced heart attack (Kounis syndrome).
  • Fever.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Inflammation of the large intestine (colitis) which causes diarrhea, usually with blood and mucus, and stomach pain.
  • Inflammation of the kidneys and blood vessels.
  • Red blood cells breaking down too quickly (hemolytic anemia).
  • Decreased platelets (cells that help blood clot).
  • Increased levels of urea nitrogen and creatinine in the blood.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to cefuroxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or any other ingredients of this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to other beta-lactam antibiotics (like penicillin).
  • Do not use if you have had severe skin rash, peeling skin, blisters, or mouth sores after using cefuroxime or other cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or use machines. Be careful until you know how it affects you.
