How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine the correct dose based on the type and severity of your infection, weight, and age. Typically, for adults and children aged 12 years and older (weighing 50 kg or more), the dose is 1-2 grams once daily. For children under 12 and newborns, the dose is 20-100 mg per kilogram of body weight once daily.

Method

This medication is always given by a doctor or nurse as an injection into a muscle or vein, or as an infusion into a vein.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults and children over 12 years is generally 4 grams. For newborns (0-14 days), the maximum daily dose is 50 mg per kilogram of body weight per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Changes in white blood cell count (e.g., increased leukocytes, decreased eosinophils) and decreased platelets.
  • Loose stools or diarrhea.
  • Changes in liver function blood test results.
  • Rash.
RARE
  • Fungal infections, such as thrush.
  • Decrease in specific white blood cells (granulocytopenia or agranulocytosis).
  • Anemia (low red blood cells, including hemolytic anemia).
  • Blood clotting problems, which may cause easy bruising, joint pain, and swelling.
  • Headache.
  • Dizziness (including a spinning sensation).
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Itching.
  • Pain or burning sensation at the injection site (in a vein or muscle).
  • Fever or high temperature.
  • Abnormal kidney function tests (increased blood creatinine).
  • Colon inflammation (colitis) with symptoms like diarrhea (often with blood/mucus), abdominal pain, and fever.
  • Seizures or confusion, especially in elderly patients with severe kidney or nervous system problems.
  • Difficulty breathing (bronchospasm).
  • Hives (itchy rash that can cover large parts of the body, with swelling).
  • Blood or sugar in urine.
  • Swelling due to fluid retention.
  • Tremor.
  • Chills.
  • Secondary infections that may not respond to the antibiotic.
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), causing severe stomach pain radiating to the back.
  • Inflammation of the mouth lining (stomatitis).
  • Inflammation of the tongue (glossitis), with swelling, redness, and soreness.
  • Gallbladder and/or liver problems, which may cause pain, nausea, vomiting, yellowing skin, itching, unusual dark urine, and pale stools.
  • Neurological condition in newborns with severe jaundice (kernicterus).
  • Skin inflammation and redness (erythema multiforme).
  • Kidney problems caused by calcium-ceftriaxone deposits, which can cause painful or reduced urination.
  • False positive Coombs test (a blood test for certain blood conditions).
  • False positive test for galactosaemia (a condition where galactose sugar builds up in the blood).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to ceftriaxone, similar antibiotics (like penicillin), or lidocaine (if injected into a muscle).
  • This medicine should not be given to premature babies, or newborns (under 28 days old) who have certain blood issues, jaundice, or are receiving calcium through a vein.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, or have gallstones or kidney stones.
  • If you have diabetes, this medicine can affect certain blood sugar tests, so discuss this with your doctor.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel dizzy.
