How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on the infection and your age; for adults, it's usually 1-2 g once daily, up to 4 g daily for severe infections. Doses for children and babies are based on their weight.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as a drip into a vein (infusion), an injection into a vein, or an injection into a muscle.

Important

The maximum dose for adults is 4 grams per day; for children and babies, the dose depends on weight and is decided by the doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Changes in white blood cells (like fewer leukocytes, more eosinophils) and platelets (fewer platelets).
  • Loose stools or diarrhea.
  • Changes in liver function blood test results.
  • Rash.
  • Fungal infections (like thrush or genital fungal infections).
  • Low white blood cell count (granulocytopenia).
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia).
  • Blood clotting problems, which can cause easy bruising, joint pain, and swelling.
  • Headache.
  • Dizziness.
  • Nausea and/or vomiting.
  • Itching.
  • Pain or burning sensation in the vein where the medicine was given, or pain at the injection site.
  • High temperature (fever).
  • Abnormal kidney function test result (increased creatinine in blood).
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions like sudden swelling of the face, throat, lips, or mouth, difficulty breathing or swallowing, sudden swelling of hands, feet, and ankles, or chest pain.
  • Severe skin rashes, including rapid blistering or peeling skin, and sores in the mouth (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, DRESS syndrome).
  • Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction causing fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and rash, usually temporary.
  • Inflammation of the large intestine (colon), with symptoms like diarrhea (often bloody and with mucus), stomach pain, and fever.
  • Difficulty breathing (bronchospasm).
  • Fainting, abnormal movements, restlessness, and seizures, especially in elderly patients with severe kidney or nervous system problems.
  • Bumpy rash (hives) that can cover a large part of your body, with itching and swelling.
  • Blood or sugar in the urine.
  • Swelling (fluid retention).
  • Chills.
  • Infection at the injection site.
  • Secondary infection that may not respond to previously prescribed antibiotics.
  • A type of anemia where red blood cells are destroyed (hemolytic anemia).
  • Severe decrease in white blood cells (agranulocytosis).
  • Seizures.
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation).
  • Pancreatitis, with symptoms like severe stomach pain radiating to the back.
  • Inflammation of the mouth lining (stomatitis).
  • Inflammation of the tongue (glossitis), with symptoms like tongue swelling, redness, and soreness.
  • Gallbladder and/or liver problems, which can cause pain, nausea, vomiting, yellowing skin, itching, unusually dark urine, and clay-colored stools.
  • A neurological condition that can occur in newborns with severe jaundice (kernicterus).
  • Kidney problems caused by ceftriaxone calcium deposits. Urination may be painful or urine production may be low.
  • False positive Coombs test result (a test for certain blood problems).
  • False positive galactosemia test result (abnormal buildup of galactose sugar in the body).
  • Ceftriaxon hameln may interfere with some blood sugar tests - check with your doctor.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to ceftriaxone, penicillin, or lidocaine (if the medicine is given into a muscle).
  • This medicine must not be given to premature babies, babies under 28 days old with certain blood problems or jaundice, or if they are receiving calcium intravenously.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, gallstones or kidney stones, or if you have had severe skin rashes before.
