How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide your specific dose; adults usually receive 1 to 2 grams, three times a day.

Method

This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse as a drip into a vein (infusion) or as an injection into a vein or muscle.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 9 grams, but it is less for children and older patients, determined by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Swelling or redness around a vein, pain, burning, swelling, or inflammation at the injection site.
  • Red, raised, itchy rash
  • Increase in a type of white blood cell called eosinophils (seen in blood tests).
  • Increase in cells that help blood clot (seen in blood tests).
  • Increase in liver enzymes (seen in blood tests).
RARE
  • Gut inflammation that may cause pain or diarrhea, possibly with blood.
  • Yeast infection in the mouth (thrush) or vagina.
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting).
  • Fever and chills
  • Decrease in white blood cells (seen in blood tests).
  • Decrease in platelets, cells that help blood clot (seen in blood tests).
  • Increase in blood urea, blood urea nitrogen, or creatinine levels (seen in blood tests).
  • Kidney inflammation or kidney failure.
  • Tingling and numbness
  • Unpleasant taste in mouth
  • Yellowing of the whites of your eyes or skin (jaundice).
  • Rash that can cause blisters and looks like small target spots (dark spot in the middle with a lighter area around it, and a dark ring on the outer edge).
  • Too rapid destruction of red blood cells (seen in blood tests).
  • Severe decrease in white blood cells (seen in blood tests).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to ceftazidime or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a severe allergic reaction to another antibiotic (like penicillin) before taking this medicine, as you could also be allergic to Ceftazidim hameln.
  • Get urgent medical help if you develop severe skin reactions, such as red target-shaped spots, blisters, or peeling skin, especially if you also have fever or flu-like symptoms.
  • Get urgent medical help if you have a severe allergic reaction with an itchy rash, swelling (especially of your face or mouth), or difficulty breathing.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience nervous system problems like shaking, seizures, or coma, especially if you have kidney problems or received a very high dose.

  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially chloramphenicol, aminoglycosides (like gentamicin), or furosemide, as Ceftazidim hameln should not be given with them without medical advice.
  • This medicine can make you feel dizzy. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
  • If you need blood or urine tests, tell the person taking the sample that you are using Ceftazidim hameln, as it can affect test results.
