How to Use

Dosage

For adults and adolescents weighing 40 kg or more, the typical dose is 1 to 2 grams three times a day.

Method

Ceftazidim hameln is typically given as a drip (intravenous infusion) or as a direct injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 9 grams for adults. For patients over 65 years, it should not exceed 3 grams per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Swelling and redness along a vein
  • Red, raised rash, possibly itchy
  • Pain, burning, swelling, or inflammation at the injection site
  • Increase in a type of white blood cell (eosinophilia)
  • Increase in cells that help blood clot
  • Increase in liver enzyme levels
RARE
  • Inflammation of the intestine (colitis), which can cause stomach pain or diarrhea with blood
  • Yeast infection in the mouth (thrush) or vagina
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fever and chills
  • Decrease in white blood cells
  • Decrease in platelets (cells that help blood clot)
  • Increase in blood urea or serum creatinine levels
  • Kidney inflammation or kidney failure
  • Tingling and numbness
  • Unpleasant taste in mouth
  • Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin (jaundice)
  • Rash with blisters, possibly target-like spots (dark center with a lighter area and a dark ring around the edge)
  • Too rapid destruction of red blood cells
  • Severe decrease in white blood cells

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to ceftazidime or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have had a severe allergic reaction to other antibiotics (like penicillin, monobactams, or carbapenems) as you might also be allergic to Ceftazidim hameln.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you notice severe skin reactions like red target-like spots, blistering, peeling skin, sores in mouth/throat/nose/genitals/eyes, widespread rash with high fever and swollen lymph nodes, or a widespread red, scaly rash with bumps under the skin, blisters, and fever.
  • Contact a doctor or nurse immediately if you experience nervous system disorders such as tremors, seizures, or coma, especially if you have kidney problems or have received too high a dose.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you have a severe allergic reaction with itchy, raised rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or mouth.

  • Do not take this medicine with chloramphenicol, aminoglycoside antibiotics (like gentamicin, tobramycin), or furosemide (a diuretic) without first talking to your doctor.
  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, planning to have a baby, or are breastfeeding.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, which can affect your ability to drive or use machines. Do not drive or operate machinery unless you are sure you are not affected.
  • Inform the person taking blood or urine samples that you are receiving Ceftazidim hameln, as it may affect test results.
