How to Use

Dosage

Adults and adolescents over 12 years usually take 2-6 g of cefotaxim per day, divided into two doses given 12 hours apart. The dose may vary based on the infection's severity.

Method

This medicine is always given by a healthcare professional. It is dissolved in sterile water or another suitable liquid, then given as an injection into a vein (infusion) or sometimes into a muscle for certain infections.

Important

For severe infections, the maximum daily dose for adults and adolescents is 12 g.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain at the injection site when given into a muscle.
RARE
  • Seizures, fever.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Skin redness, hives (urticaria), itching (pruritus).
  • Changes in the number of certain blood cells (e.g., increase in eosinophils, decrease in white blood cells or platelets).
  • Increase in liver enzymes.
  • Temporary 'healing crisis' with sudden fever and chills (Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction).
  • Kidney problems and increased creatinine levels in the blood.
  • Pain, swelling, and redness along the vein at the injection site.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to cefotaxim or similar antibiotics (cephalosporins, penicillins).
  • Stop treatment and see a doctor immediately if you develop severe skin reactions, such as widespread rash, blistering, peeling skin, or sores in the mouth or eyes.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe, persistent diarrhea during or after treatment; do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without consulting a doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
  • Seek medical advice if you notice confusion, unusual movements, or seizures after taking this medicine.
