How to Use

Dosage

Adults and adolescents usually receive 2 to 6 grams per day.

Method

A healthcare professional will always give you this medicine, usually as an injection into a vein or muscle, or as a drip (infusion) into a vein.

Important

The highest daily dose for adults and adolescents is 12 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain where the injection was given into a muscle.
RARE
  • Seizures.
  • Fever.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Redness of the skin.
  • Hives (itchy bumps on the skin).
  • Itching.
  • Changes in the number of certain blood cells (e.g., more eosinophils, fewer white blood cells, fewer platelets).
  • Increased liver enzymes (substances made by the liver).
  • Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (a temporary "healing crisis" with sudden fever and chills).
  • Kidney problems and higher levels of creatinine in the blood.
  • Pain, swelling, and redness where the medicine was injected into a vein.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to cefotaxime or similar antibiotics (cephalosporins), or if you've had a bad allergic reaction to other penicillin-like antibiotics.
  • Stop treatment and tell your doctor right away if you get severe skin rash, blisters, peeling skin, or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, genitals, or eyes. This can also include a widespread rash with fever. These are signs of serious skin problems.
  • If you get severe, lasting diarrhea during or after treatment, contact your doctor right away. Do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without asking your doctor first.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you feel confused, make unusual movements, or have seizures after taking this medicine.
