How to Use

Dosage

For adults and adolescents over 12 years: Usually 2 to 6 grams (g) daily, divided into two doses given every 12 hours. Your doctor will adjust the dose based on your infection and condition.

Method

This medicine is given by a healthcare professional. It is usually given as an injection into a vein (intravenous, IV) or a muscle (intramuscular, IM), or as a slow drip into a vein (infusion).

Important

The maximum daily dose for severe infections is 12 grams (g).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain at the injection site (when given into a muscle).
RARE
  • Increased bleeding or bruising (due to low platelet count).
  • Fever, sore throat, or mouth sores (due to low white blood cell count).
  • Rash (hives) or itchy skin.
  • Painful swelling and inflammation at the injection site (when given into a vein).
  • Loose stools or diarrhea.
  • Changes in blood tests for liver and kidney function.
  • Herxheimer reaction (symptoms like fever and chills, especially when treating certain bacterial infections).
  • Severe gut inflammation (colitis) causing severe, watery, or bloody diarrhea with stomach cramps and fever.
  • Severe blood problems, including changes in white blood cell counts, leading to frequent infections, fever, chills, sore throat, or mouth sores.
  • Damage to red blood cells, causing tiredness, shortness of breath, or paleness.
  • Severe allergic reactions with swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat, and sudden difficulty breathing, speaking, or swallowing.
  • Headache, dizziness, or seizures (fits).
  • Changes in heart rhythm or rate after a very fast injection into a vein.
  • Yellow skin and eyes, loss of appetite, or pale urine (signs of liver inflammation).
  • Increased or decreased urine output, blood in urine, swelling of limbs, or pain in the side (signs of kidney problems).
  • Systemic reactions (affecting the whole body) if intramuscular injection is combined with lidocaine.
  • Nausea (feeling sick) or vomiting (being sick).
  • Stomach pain.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Cefotaxim hameln if you are allergic to cefotaxime, other similar antibiotics (cephalosporins), or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Stop using this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you get a severe skin rash with blisters, peeling skin, or sores in your mouth or on your body.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe or long-lasting diarrhea.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or are on a special diet with low salt.
  • This medicine can make you feel dizzy or cause unusual movements. Do not drive or use machines if you experience these effects.
