How to Use

Dosage

Typically 2-6 grams daily, divided into two doses given every 12 hours; for severe infections, 2-3 grams every 6-8 hours. Doses for children are based on body weight and infection severity.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give this medicine as an injection or infusion into a vein, or in some cases, into a muscle.

Important

The maximum daily dose for severe infections is 12 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain where the injection is given into a muscle.
  • Fever and chills if you are treated for infections caused by certain bacteria (spirochetes); this means the medicine is working (Herxheimer reaction).
  • Changes in blood test results that check how your liver and kidneys are working.
  • Fever.
  • Allergic skin reactions like rash, hives, or itchy skin.
  • Painful swelling and inflammation at the site where the medicine is given into a vein.
  • Loose stools or diarrhea.
  • Reduced platelet count, which can lead to more bleeding or bruising.
  • Low white blood cell count, leading to fever, sore throat, or mouth sores from infections.
RARE
  • Severe skin reactions such as widespread red spots, blisters, skin peeling, or sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, or eyes, often with fever and flu-like symptoms.
  • Severe bowel inflammation (colitis) with bad, lasting, watery or bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever.
  • Serious blood problems, including changes in white blood cells that can cause repeat infections, fever, chills, sore throat, or mouth sores.
  • Damage to red blood cells, causing tiredness, shortness of breath, or paleness.
  • Severe allergic reactions with swelling of the lips, tongue, face, and neck, and sudden trouble breathing, speaking, or swallowing.
  • Headache, dizziness, or seizures; these can be signs of a brain condition.
  • Changes in heart rhythm or pulse after a very fast injection into a vein.
  • Yellow skin and eyes, loss of appetite, or pale urine due to liver inflammation.
  • Kidney problems, such as more or less urine, blood in urine, swelling in limbs, or pain in your side.
  • Whole-body reactions when this medicine is given into a muscle with lidocaine.
  • Feeling sick (nausea) and throwing up (vomiting).
  • Stomach pain.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to cefotaxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics, penicillin, or similar antibiotics.
  • Do not take if you have ever had a severe rash, skin peeling, blisters, or mouth sores after using cefotaxime or similar medicines.
  • If you get severe, lasting diarrhea during or after treatment, contact a doctor immediately and do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without asking.
  • Stop treatment and tell your doctor immediately if you develop a widespread rash, blisters, skin peeling, or sores in the mouth, eyes, or genitals, especially with fever. These can be signs of serious skin conditions.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, as your dose may need to be adjusted.

  • Tell your doctor if you experience confusion, unusual movements, or seizures after taking this medicine.
  • If you are on a low-salt diet, tell your doctor because this medicine contains sodium.
  • If this medicine is mixed with lidocaine, tell your doctor if you are allergic to lidocaine, your child is under 2.5 years old, or you have heart problems.
