How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right dose for you or your child. Typically, adults and adolescents receive 750 mg to 1.5 g per day, and children receive 30-100 mg per kg of body weight per day.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give this medicine as an injection into a vein or muscle, or as a slow drip into a vein.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults and adolescents is 6 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site.
  • Changes in liver tests (increased liver enzymes).
  • Changes in white blood cell count (fewer certain types of white blood cells).
  • Decrease in red blood cells (anemia).
RARE
  • Rash, itching, or hives.
  • Diarrhea, nausea, or stomach pain.
  • Decrease in white blood cells (leukopenia).
  • Increased bilirubin levels (a substance produced by the liver).
  • Positive Coombs test (a blood test).
  • Fungal infections, such as thrush.
  • Fever.
  • Severe diarrhea, possibly with blood or mucus, and stomach pain.
  • Inflammation of the kidneys or blood vessels.
  • Red blood cells breaking down too quickly (hemolytic anemia).
  • Rash with blisters and target-like spots (erythema multiforme).
  • Decrease in platelets (thrombocytopenia).
  • Increase in blood urea and creatinine levels.

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to cefuroxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or penicillin.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you get a severe rash, peeling skin, blisters, or sores in your mouth.
  • Inform your doctor or nurse that you are taking Cefirion if you have blood or urine tests, as it can affect the results.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter ones.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel unwell after taking this medicine.
