How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual dose is 4 grams per day, given as two doses (2 grams every 12 hours).

Method

A doctor or nurse will give this medicine to you as a drip into a vein (infusion) or as a direct injection into a vein.

Important

For very severe infections, adults may receive up to 6 grams per day, given as three doses (2 grams every 8 hours).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Rash.
RARE
  • Bowel inflammation, causing bloody or slimy diarrhea and stomach pain.
  • Fungal infections, such as in the mouth or vagina.
  • Fever.
  • Skin redness, hives, and itching.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Headache.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Seizures.
  • Dizziness.
  • Altered taste, tingling or numbness of the skin.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Constipation.
  • Chills.
  • Swelling in deeper skin layers.
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., widespread rash with blisters, difficulty breathing).
  • Coma, reduced consciousness, thinking difficulties, confusion, and hallucinations.
  • Kidney problems.
  • Bleeding.
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count).
  • Low levels of certain blood cells (e.g., white blood cells, platelets).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to cefepime, other similar antibiotics (cephalosporins), or any other ingredients in it.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a severe allergic reaction to other penicillin-like antibiotics in the past.
  • Do not use if you have too much acid in your blood.
  • If you have kidney problems, your doctor might need to change your dose.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you get severe and lasting diarrhea, as it could be a sign of a serious bowel problem.

  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you are having blood or urine tests, as this medicine can affect the results.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel unwell, have a headache, dizziness, or vision problems while taking this medicine.
