How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children over 12 years old (or weighing over 40 kg), the usual dose is 2 grams every 12 hours. For children aged 2 months to 12 years (or weighing under 40 kg), it's 50 mg per kg of body weight every 12 hours.

Method

This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse, either as a drip (intravenous infusion) or as an injection directly into a vein.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults can be up to 6 grams for very severe infections.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Positive Coombs test (a blood test finding)
  • Pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin rash
  • Increased liver enzymes (seen in blood tests)
  • Increased bilirubin (seen in blood tests)
  • Changes in white blood cell count (eosinophilia)
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
RARE
  • Inflammation of the colon (colitis) causing bloody and slimy diarrhea, and stomach pain
  • Fungal infections (e.g., oral thrush, vaginal yeast infection)
  • Fever
  • Hives (urticaria), itching
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Headache
  • Low levels of certain blood cells (e.g., white blood cells or platelets)
  • Increased kidney function markers (seen in blood tests)
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Seizures, dizziness, altered taste, tingling or numbness of the skin
  • Shortness of breath
  • Abdominal pain, constipation
  • Chills
  • Swelling in deeper skin layers
  • Coma, decreased consciousness, difficulty thinking, confusion, and hallucinations
  • False positive urine glucose tests
  • Digestive problems
  • Kidney problems
  • Bleeding
  • Changes in blood cell count (agranulocytosis)
  • Red blood cells destroyed too quickly (hemolytic anemia)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to cefepim or other similar antibiotics (cephalosporins), or if you have had a severe allergic reaction to other penicillin-like antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you get severe, persistent diarrhea during treatment, as this could be a sign of a serious gut infection.
  • Tell your doctor you are taking this medicine if you are going to have blood or urine tests, as it can affect the results.
