How to Use

Dosage

For adults, typically 1–4 grams per day, divided into 2–4 doses. For children, the dose depends on their weight and is divided into 2–4 doses per day.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection or infusion into a vein by a healthcare professional after it has been dissolved.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 6 grams. For children, the maximum daily dose is 100 mg per kilogram of body weight.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Pain at the injection site, which can sometimes lead to hardening of the skin.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, such as skin redness, rash, hives, fever, swelling (face, throat, lungs), and difficulty breathing. Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if these occur.
  • Oral thrush (yeast infection in the mouth).
  • Seizures or convulsions.
  • Vein swelling or blood clot at the injection site.
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes).
  • Severe skin rash, possibly with blisters, fever, and peeling skin.
  • Genital infections, such as itching, redness, swelling, or discharge.
  • Changes in blood sugar (both high and low).
  • Changes in blood cell counts that can cause bleeding or bruising.
  • Dizziness, fatigue, or a general feeling of being unwell.
  • Chest pain, shortness of breath, cough, or stuffy nose.
  • Liver problems, with abnormal liver enzyme levels in blood tests.
  • Kidney problems, such as swelling or abnormal urine test results.
  • Severe diarrhea with blood (pseudomembranous colitis).
  • New infections that do not respond to this medicine (superinfections).
  • Sleep disorders, such as nightmares or insomnia.
  • Nervousness, restlessness, drowsiness, hot flashes, vision disturbances, or epileptic seizures.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to cephalosporins or have had a severe allergic reaction to other beta-lactam antibiotics (like penicillins).
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, bleeding disorders, or stomach ulcers.
  • If you get severe diarrhea during or after treatment, contact your doctor immediately. Do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without talking to your doctor.
  • This medicine is not recommended for newborns or infants under one month old.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should generally be stopped during treatment.
