How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your daily dose. It is usually given once a day.

Method

It is given as a slow drip into a vein (infusion) over about 1 hour by a healthcare professional.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is usually 70 mg, but your doctor will decide.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling tired or weak (low red blood cells), fewer white blood cells
  • Changes in protein levels or low potassium in your blood
  • Headache
  • Inflammation of a vein
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea, feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting)
  • Changes in some blood test results, including liver tests
  • Itching, skin rash, redness of the skin, or sweating more than usual
  • Joint pain
  • Chills, fever
  • Itching at the injection site
RARE
  • Changes in some blood test results, including those for red or white blood cells, platelets, or blood clotting
  • Loss of appetite, swelling from too much fluid, problems with body salts, high blood sugar, too much or too little calcium or magnesium, or too much acid in your blood
  • Feeling confused, nervous, or having trouble sleeping
  • Dizziness, reduced sense of touch, shaking, feeling sleepy, changes in taste, or a tingling/numb feeling
  • Blurred vision, watery eyes, swollen eyelids, or yellowing of the whites of your eyes
  • Feeling a fast or uneven heartbeat, or heart problems
  • Hot flashes, high or low blood pressure, or redness and tenderness along a vein
  • Wheezing or coughing due to narrowed airways, fast breathing, shortness of breath at night, low oxygen, unusual breathing sounds, stuffy nose, or a sore throat
  • Stomach pain, upper stomach pain, bloating, constipation, trouble swallowing, dry mouth, indigestion, gas, or fluid buildup in the abdomen
  • Reduced bile flow, enlarged liver, yellow skin or eyes, liver damage from medicine, or liver problems
  • Skin changes, widespread itching, hives, various types of rashes, or red, itchy bumps on your arms, legs, face, or body
  • Back pain, pain in your arms or legs, bone pain, muscle pain, or muscle weakness
  • Kidney problems or sudden kidney failure
  • Pain or other issues at the injection site (like redness, a hard lump, swelling, irritation, rash, hives, or fluid leaking), or inflammation of the vein at the injection site
  • High blood pressure, changes in certain blood tests (like for kidneys, electrolytes, or blood clotting), or higher levels of medicines that weaken your immune system
  • Chest discomfort or pain, feeling like your body temperature has changed, generally feeling unwell, unspecified pain, swelling in your face, ankles, hands, or feet, tenderness, or feeling tired

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to Caspofungin or any of its ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had liver problems, as your dose might need to be changed.
  • If you are taking cyclosporine, your doctor may need to do more blood tests.
  • This medicine can cause severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome; seek medical help if you notice skin issues.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as this medicine should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks. Do not breastfeed while on this medicine.
