How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your daily dose. It can be adjusted if you weigh more than 80 kg.

Method

This medicine is given once a day as a slow infusion into a vein, over about one hour, by a healthcare professional.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is typically 70 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low red blood cells (hemoglobin) or white blood cells.
  • Low levels of a blood protein (albumin) or potassium.
  • Headache.
  • Swelling and pain in a vein.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Diarrhea, feeling sick (nausea), or being sick (vomiting).
  • Changes in some lab blood tests, including liver function tests.
  • Itching, skin rash, red skin, or sweating more than usual.
  • Joint pain.
  • Chills or fever.
  • Itching where the medicine was injected.
RARE
  • Changes in other blood tests, including those for blood clotting, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
  • Loss of appetite, extra body fluid, imbalance of body salts (like high blood sugar, low or high calcium, low magnesium, or high acid levels in blood).
  • Feeling confused, nervous, or having trouble sleeping.
  • Dizziness, reduced or strange feelings on the skin (like tingling or numbness), shaking (tremors), feeling sleepy, or changes in taste.
  • Blurred eyesight, more tears, swollen eyelids, or yellowing of the whites of your eyes.
  • Feeling your heart beat fast or irregularly, fast heartbeat, irregular heartbeat, or heart failure.
  • Flushing, hot flashes, high or low blood pressure, or a red and very sore area around a vein.
  • Wheezing or coughing from tight airways, fast breathing, waking up short of breath at night, low oxygen in your blood, unusual breathing sounds (like crackles), blocked nose, or a sore throat.
  • Stomach pain, upper stomach pain, feeling bloated, constipation, trouble swallowing, dry mouth, indigestion, gas, other stomach problems, or swelling from fluid in your belly.
  • Reduced bile flow, enlarged liver, yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), liver damage, or liver problems.
  • Skin changes, widespread itching, hives, different types of rashes, or red and often itchy bumps on your arms, legs, or face.
  • Back pain, arm or leg pain, bone pain, muscle pain, or muscle weakness.
  • Kidney problems or sudden kidney failure.
  • Pain or problems where the medicine was injected or at the catheter site (like redness, a hard lump, pain, swelling, irritation, rash, hives, or fluid leaking).
  • High blood pressure, changes in kidney or blood clotting tests, or increased levels of medicines that weaken your immune system.
  • Chest discomfort or pain, feeling your body temperature has changed, feeling generally unwell, unexplained pain, swelling of your face, ankles, hands, or feet, tenderness, or feeling tired.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to caspofungin or any other ingredient in it.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to other medicines or have had liver problems, as your dose may need to be changed.
  • If you are taking cyclosporine, tell your doctor; you might need extra blood tests during treatment.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience a severe allergic reaction, such as a rash, itching, swelling of your face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing.
