How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your daily dose and how long you need to take it.

Method

It is given slowly into a vein (intravenous infusion) over about one hour.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum daily dose for you. For children, the dose should not exceed 70 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fever, chills
  • Headache
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Skin rash, itching, redness, increased sweating
  • Pain or itching at the injection site
  • Changes in blood test results (e.g., liver values, hemoglobin, white blood cells, albumin, potassium levels)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vein inflammation
  • Joint pain
  • Fast heart rate
  • Flushing, low blood pressure
RARE
  • Changes in blood test results (including red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, blood clotting, kidney function, electrolytes)
  • Loss of appetite, fluid retention, imbalance in body salts (electrolytes), high or low blood sugar, calcium or magnesium levels, increased acid levels in blood
  • Confusion, nervousness, difficulty sleeping
  • Dizziness, reduced or altered sensation (especially in the skin), tremors, drowsiness, altered taste, tingling or numbness
  • Blurred vision, increased tearing, swollen eyelids, yellowing of the whites of the eyes
  • Feeling of fast or irregular heartbeat, rapid heartbeat, irregular heartbeat, heart rhythm disorders, heart failure
  • Flushing, hot flashes, high or low blood pressure, redness and tenderness along a vein
  • Tightness of muscles around the airways with wheezing or cough, rapid breathing, shortness of breath that wakes you up at night, lack of oxygen in blood, abnormal breathing sounds, crackling sounds in lungs, nasal congestion, sore throat
  • Abdominal pain (upper abdomen), bloating, constipation, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, indigestion, gas, stomach problems, fluid buildup in the abdomen
  • Reduced bile flow, enlarged liver, yellowing of skin and/or whites of eyes, drug-induced liver damage, liver dysfunction
  • Skin tissue changes, generalized itching, hives, various types of rashes, abnormal skin, red and often itchy spots on limbs and sometimes face and body
  • Back pain, limb pain, bone pain, muscle pain, muscle weakness
  • Kidney failure, sudden kidney failure
  • Pain at the catheter insertion site, reactions at injection site (redness, hardening, pain, swelling, irritation, rash, hives, fluid leakage from catheter into tissue), vein inflammation at injection site
  • Increased blood pressure and changes in some lab values (including kidney, electrolyte, and coagulation tests), increased levels of immunosuppressive medicines you are taking
  • Unpleasant feeling in chest, chest pain, feeling of altered body temperature, general discomfort, vague pain, swelling of face, ankles, hands or feet, swelling, tenderness, fatigue

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to caspofungin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor immediately if you get a rash, itching, warm feeling, swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or severe skin peeling and blistering. These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction or severe skin conditions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had liver problems, as your dose may need to be changed.
  • If you are taking ciclosporin or tacrolimus (medicines used to prevent organ rejection or to suppress the immune system), your doctor may need to take more blood tests during treatment.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or suspect you might be, unless your doctor says it's absolutely necessary.
