How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your daily dose and how long you need to take it. The dose might change if you weigh more than 80 kg, or if you are a child or teenager.

Method

It is given by a healthcare professional as a slow drip into a vein (intravenous infusion) over about one hour.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose, but it is generally not more than 70 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Reduced red blood cell count (hemoglobin), reduced white blood cell count
  • Reduced albumin (a type of protein), low potassium levels in blood
  • Headache
  • Inflammation of a vein
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
  • Changes in some laboratory blood test results (including elevated liver values)
  • Itching, rash, skin redness or increased sweating
  • Joint pain
  • Chills, fever
  • Itching at the injection site
RARE
  • Rash, itching, feeling of warmth, swelling of face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing (may be a histamine reaction)
  • Difficulty breathing with wheezing or worsening rash (may be an allergic reaction)
  • Cough, severe breathing difficulties (if you are an adult with invasive aspergillosis, this could lead to respiratory arrest)
  • Rash, peeling skin, sores on mucous membranes, hives, widespread peeling skin
  • Changes in some laboratory blood test results (including blood clotting disorders, platelets, red blood cells, and white blood cells)
  • Loss of appetite, fluid retention, imbalance of body salts, high blood sugar, low or high calcium levels, low magnesium levels, high acid levels in blood
  • Confusion, nervousness, inability to sleep
  • Dizziness, reduced sense of touch or skin sensitivity, tremors, drowsiness, taste disturbance, tingling or numbness
  • Blurred vision, increased tearing, swollen eyelids, yellowing of the whites of the eyes
  • Feeling of fast or irregular heartbeat, fast heartbeat, irregular heartbeat, abnormal heart rhythm, heart failure
  • Flushing, hot flashes, high blood pressure, low blood pressure, redness and severe tenderness along a vein
  • Wheezing or cough due to constricted airways, rapid breathing, shortness of breath waking you from sleep, low oxygen in blood, abnormal breathing sounds, crackles in lungs, wheezing, stuffy nose, cough, sore throat
  • Abdominal pain, upper abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, indigestion, gas, stomach discomfort, swelling due to fluid retention around the abdomen
  • Reduced bile flow, enlarged liver, yellowing of skin and/or whites of the eyes, drug-induced liver damage, liver disorder
  • Skin changes, generalized itching, hives, various types of rashes, skin lesions, red and often itchy spots on limbs and sometimes on face and body
  • Back pain, pain in a limb, bone pain, muscle pain, muscle weakness
  • Reduced kidney function, sudden kidney failure
  • Pain at the catheter entry site, injection site symptoms (redness, hardness, pain, swelling, irritation, rash, hives, fluid leaking from catheter into tissue), inflammation of the vein at the injection site
  • Elevated blood pressure and changes in some laboratory blood test results (including kidney, electrolyte, and clotting tests), increased levels of your immunosuppressant medicines
  • Chest discomfort, chest pain, feeling of altered body temperature, general feeling of being unwell, vague pain, facial swelling, swelling of ankles, hands or feet, swelling, tenderness, feeling tired

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to caspofungin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any other medicines.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had liver problems, as your dose might need to be changed.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking ciclosporin (used to prevent organ rejection or to dampen the immune system), as you may need extra blood tests.
  • This medicine can cause serious skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN).

  • Do not breastfeed if you are receiving Caspofungin Sandoz.
