How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the correct dose for you each day.

Method

The medicine will be given as a slow drip into a vein (intravenous infusion) over about one hour.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose. For adults, it is usually 50 mg, but can be higher for the first dose. For children, the maximum daily dose is 70 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Low albumin or potassium levels in blood
  • Headache
  • Vein inflammation
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting
  • Changes in some blood test results (e.g., higher liver values)
  • Itching, rash, skin redness, or increased sweating
  • Joint pain
  • Chills or fever
  • Itching at the injection site
  • Fast heartbeat (common in children)
  • Flushing, low blood pressure (common in children)
RARE
  • Changes in some blood test results (including blood clotting, platelet, red and white blood cell counts)
  • Loss of appetite, fluid buildup in the body, electrolyte imbalance, high or low blood sugar, high or low blood calcium, low blood magnesium, or high blood acidity
  • Confusion, nervousness, or sleeplessness
  • Dizziness, reduced sense of touch or sensitivity (especially in the skin), tremors, drowsiness, taste changes, tingling, or numbness
  • Blurred vision, increased tearing, swollen eyelids, or yellowing of the whites of the eyes
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat, or heart failure
  • Flushing, hot flashes, high or low blood pressure, or redness and tenderness around a vein
  • Wheezing or cough due to narrowed airways; rapid breathing; shortness of breath waking you from sleep; lack of oxygen in tissues; abnormal breathing sounds; crackling in lungs; blocked nose; or sore throat
  • Abdominal pain, upper abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, indigestion, flatulence, stomach upset, or swelling due to fluid in the abdominal cavity
  • Reduced bile flow, enlarged liver, yellowing of skin and/or whites of eyes, liver damage caused by medicine or chemicals, or liver dysfunction
  • Skin tissue changes; generalized itching; hives; various types of rashes; skin changes; or red, often itchy bumps on arms, legs, face, or body
  • Back pain, arm or leg pain, bone pain, muscle pain, or muscle weakness
  • Kidney problems, or sudden kidney failure
  • Pain at catheter site, injection site symptoms (redness, hard lump, pain, swelling, irritation, rash, hives, or fluid leakage from catheter into tissue), or vein inflammation at injection site
  • High blood pressure and changes in some blood test results (including kidney, electrolyte, and clotting tests), or increased levels of immune-suppressing medicines you are taking
  • Unpleasant feeling in chest; chest pain; feeling of changed body temperature; general discomfort; general pain; facial swelling; swelling of ankles, hands, or feet; swelling; tenderness; or feeling tired

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Caspofungin Orion if you are allergic to caspofungin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had liver problems, as your dose may need to be changed.
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking cyclosporine, as you might need more blood tests.
  • This medicine can cause severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). Seek immediate medical help if you experience rash, skin peeling, or sores.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. This medicine should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. You should not breastfeed during treatment.
