How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose. Typical starting doses for adults often range from 3.125 mg to 12.5 mg, taken once or twice daily.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with water. Do not chew them. You can take them with or without food. Some tablets (6.25 mg, 12.5 mg, 25 mg) can be divided.

Important

Do not take more than 50 mg per day for high blood pressure or more than 100 mg per day for other conditions, unless your doctor says so.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Worsening of heart failure (symptoms like shortness of breath, swollen ankles)
  • Low blood pressure
  • Tiredness
  • Bronchitis, pneumonia, respiratory or urinary tract infections
  • Weight gain, increased cholesterol, changes in blood sugar (especially in diabetics), anemia
  • Feeling down or depressed
  • Vision problems, dry or irritated eyes
  • Slow heart rate, swelling due to fluid buildup
  • Cold hands or feet, circulation problems in arms and legs, Raynaud's syndrome (fingers/toes change color)
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain
  • Pain in limbs, general body pain
  • Kidney problems, issues with urination
RARE
  • Sleep problems
  • Feeling like you might faint, fainting, tingling in limbs
  • Allergic skin rashes, hives, itching, psoriasis-like reactions, hair loss
  • Problems with erection (impotence)
  • Stuffy nose
  • Low number of blood platelets (can cause bruising/nosebleeds) or white blood cells (can lead to infections)
  • Very rare, severe skin reactions with blistering (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to carvedilol or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe heart failure that needs special intravenous medication.
  • Do not take if you have ever had breathing problems, wheezing, asthma, or severe lung disease (COPD).
  • Do not take if you have a severe liver disease that needs medical treatment.
  • Do not take if your heart beats very slowly (less than 50 beats per minute) or if you have very low blood pressure.
