How to Use

Dosage

For heart failure, your doctor will start you on a very low dose, usually 1.25 mg once daily, and increase it gradually. For high blood pressure or chest pain, the usual starting dose is 5 mg once daily.

Method

Take the tablet with water in the morning, with or without food. Do not crush or chew the tablet.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 10 mg for heart failure, and 20 mg for high blood pressure or chest pain. If you have severe kidney or liver problems, the maximum daily dose is 10 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling weak (especially with chronic heart failure)
  • Tiredness, dizziness, headache
  • Coldness or numbness in hands or feet
  • Low blood pressure
  • Stomach problems like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation
  • Slow heartbeat (especially with chronic heart failure)
  • Worsening heart failure (especially with chronic heart failure)
RARE
  • Sleep problems
  • Depression
  • Dizziness when standing up
  • Breathing difficulties (in patients with asthma or chronic lung disease)
  • Muscle weakness, muscle cramps
  • Slow or irregular heartbeat (not related to chronic heart failure)
  • Hearing problems
  • Allergic rhinitis (runny, itchy nose)
  • Reduced tear flow (dry eyes)
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis) causing yellow skin or eyes
  • Abnormal blood test results for liver function or fats
  • Allergic-like reactions (itching, redness, rash); severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, neck, tongue, mouth or throat, difficulty breathing) - seek immediate medical help.
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Nightmares, hallucinations
  • Fainting
  • Eye irritation and redness (conjunctivitis)
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Appearance or worsening of scaly skin rash (psoriasis); psoriasis-like rash

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Cardovia if you are allergic to bisoprolol or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Cardovia if you have severe asthma or severe chronic lung disease.
  • Do not take Cardovia if you have acute or worsening heart failure that requires intravenous medicines to strengthen your heart.
  • Do not take Cardovia if you have a very slow heartbeat, very low blood pressure, or irregular heartbeats due to certain heart conditions.
  • Do not take Cardovia if you have severe circulation problems in your arms or legs (like Raynaud's disease).
