How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your individual dose based on how severe your illness is and how you respond to treatment.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth, swallowing it whole.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • uncontrolled movements, like twitching and spasms
  • urinary tract infections
  • loss of appetite
  • depression, confusion, unusual dreams
  • slow movements ('on-off' effect), dizziness, tingling or numbness in the skin
  • drowsiness, sudden sleep attacks
  • heart palpitations
  • shortness of breath
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
RARE
  • allergic reactions like hives, itching, rash, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • chest pain
  • irregular heartbeat
  • dizziness when standing up quickly (low blood pressure)
  • psychotic symptoms like delusions or hallucinations
  • muscle stiffness, high body temperature, mental changes (signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • bleeding in the stomach or intestines
  • seizures
  • blood disorders (like pale skin, fever, sore throat, easy bruising, and prolonged bleeding)
  • agitation
  • fainting
  • hives
  • muscle twitching
  • anemia
  • dementia
  • high blood pressure, vein inflammation
  • ulcer in the first part of the small intestine
  • darkened urine, sweat, and/or saliva
  • itching, reddish rash, stomach and joint pain due to blood vessel inflammation (Henoch-Schönlein purpura)
  • hair loss, skin rash
  • melanoma (skin cancer)
  • insomnia, anxiety, intense feeling of happiness
  • impaired sense of time and place, teeth grinding
  • impaired attention, bitter taste in mouth, weakness, headache
  • drooping eyelids and small pupils (Horner's syndrome activation)
  • muscle tone disorders, increased hand tremors, numbness
  • double vision, blurred vision, dilated pupils
  • involuntary temporary upward gaze, eyelid spasms
  • hot flashes, flushing
  • hoarseness, changes in breathing rhythm, hiccups
  • dry mouth, increased salivation, difficulty swallowing
  • stomach pain and discomfort, constipation, flatulence, heartburn or abdominal bloating, burning tongue
  • increased sweating
  • lockjaw (difficulty opening mouth)
  • difficulty urinating, urinary incontinence
  • prolonged and painful erection
  • weakness, general malaise, swelling, fatigue, difficulty walking
  • weight gain or loss, increased tendency to fall
  • compulsive urge to take higher doses of carbidopa/levodopa than needed to control motor symptoms
  • impulse control disorders, such as a strong urge to gamble excessively, changed or increased sexual interest, uncontrolled excessive buying or spending, binge eating or compulsive eating

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to levodopa, carbidopa, or any other ingredients in it.
  • Do not take if you have unexamined skin lesions or a history of skin cancer.
  • Do not take if you are using MAO inhibitors for depression.
  • Do not take if you have narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • Avoid taking this medicine with high-protein meals (e.g., meat, eggs, milk) as it can reduce the medicine's effect.

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if you are planning a pregnancy.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness or sudden sleep attacks. Avoid driving or operating machinery until these symptoms have gone away.
  • Tell your doctor if you develop a strong urge or need to do things that could harm you or others (e.g., gambling, compulsive shopping, increased sex drive).
