How to Use

Dosage

The starting dose is one 12.5 mg/50 mg tablet three or four times a day, or one 25 mg/100 mg tablet three times a day, as instructed by your doctor.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth. Take the medicine regularly and avoid taking it with a large, high-protein meal (like meat, eggs, milk, cheese).

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Loss of appetite
  • Confusion, dizziness, nightmares, drowsiness, tiredness, trouble sleeping, feeling good (euphoria), memory problems, feeling stimulated, unusual dreams
  • Movement problems like involuntary movements (dyskinesia), stiff muscle movements (dystonia), sudden changes in Parkinson's symptoms ('on-off' periods), or slow movements during 'on-off' periods
  • Low blood pressure when standing up too quickly, sometimes with dizziness or feeling faint
  • Sudden loss of awareness
  • Nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, bitter taste in mouth
RARE
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Trouble with muscle coordination (ataxia), increased hand tremors
  • High blood pressure
  • Hoarseness, chest pain
  • Constipation, diarrhea, gas
  • Increased saliva, trouble swallowing
  • Swelling due to fluid (edema)
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dark urine
  • Muscle weakness, general weakness
  • Feeling unwell
  • Hot flashes
  • Blood disorders (low white blood cells, anemia, low platelets that cause bruising and bleeding)
  • Agitation, anxiety, impaired thinking, confusion, headache, increased sexual desire, numbness, seizures/convulsions
  • Episodes of severe mental illness with loss of control over behavior
  • Tingling, prickling, itching without visible cause
  • Increased tendency to fall, walking problems, lockjaw
  • Blurred vision, eyelid spasms (may be a sign of overdose), worsening of an existing eye condition (Horner's syndrome), double vision, dilated pupils, reduced eye movements
  • Vein inflammation
  • Shortness of breath, abnormal breathing
  • Digestive problems (feeling of fullness, stomach pain, burping, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, gut pain, dark saliva, teeth grinding, hiccups, gut bleeding, burning tongue, ulcers in the small intestine)
  • Skin rash with severe itching, hives, facial redness, hair loss, increased sweating, dark sweat
  • In children, allergy-related bleeding in the skin and gut (Henoch-Schönlein purpura)
  • Trouble urinating, involuntary urination, persistent erection (priapism)
  • Drowsiness and constant daytime tiredness, or sudden sleep attacks

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to carbidopa, levodopa, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have had skin cancer or have suspicious moles that a doctor has not checked.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are using certain antidepressants called MAO inhibitors; you must stop these at least two weeks before starting Carbidopa/Levodopa Orifarm.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have narrow-angle glaucoma (a condition that can cause sudden high eye pressure).
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a tumor on your adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma) that causes high blood pressure attacks.

  • Do not take this medicine if your body makes too much cortisol or thyroid hormones.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe heart disease.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you get an allergic reaction. Signs can be hives, itching, rash, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, which can make it hard to breathe or swallow.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you feel chest pain.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you have an uneven or very fast heartbeat.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you have bleeding from your gut, which can appear as blood in your stool or dark stool.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you have blood problems. Signs can be pale skin, tiredness, fever, sore throat, easy bruising, or bleeding that won't stop easily after an injury.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you have stiff muscles, severe trouble sitting still, high fever, sweating, more saliva than usual, and feel less aware (this could be a serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you experience mental changes, including false beliefs (delusions), seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations), depression (very rarely), or thoughts of harming yourself.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you have seizures.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you have a very severe blood problem (a lack of white blood cells) with a sudden high fever, bad sore throat, and mouth sores (agranulocytosis).
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family/carer notice new urges or behaviors that are unusual for you, or if you cannot resist an impulse to do things that could harm you or others. These include gambling, overeating, excessive spending, or a sudden strong increase in sexual thoughts or feelings.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family/carer notice you developing addiction-like symptoms, with a strong urge to take higher doses of Carbidopa/Levodopa Orifarm or other Parkinson's medicines.
