How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the correct dose based on your body size; typically, you take 1250 mg per square meter of body surface area.

Method

Take the tablets whole with water in the morning and evening, within 30 minutes after eating (breakfast and dinner). Do not crush or split the tablets.

Important

The maximum dose is generally 1250 mg per square meter of body surface area, taken twice daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Abdominal pain
  • Rash, dry or itchy skin
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea (more than 4 bowel movements per day or at night)
  • Vomiting (more than once a day)
  • Nausea (loss of appetite, eating much less than usual)
  • Mouth sores (pain, redness, swelling or sores in your mouth and/or throat)
  • Hand-foot syndrome (pain, swelling, redness, or tingling in hands and/or feet)
  • Fever (38 °C or higher)
  • Infection (signs of bacterial, viral, or other infection)
  • Chest pain (in the middle of the chest, especially during exercise)
  • Decreased white or red blood cell count (seen in blood tests)
  • Dehydration, weight loss
  • Insomnia, depression
  • Headache, drowsiness, dizziness, abnormal skin sensations (numbness or tingling), taste changes
  • Eye irritation, increased tear production, red eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Vein inflammation (thrombophlebitis)
  • Shortness of breath, nosebleeds, cough, runny nose
  • Cold sores or other herpes infections
  • Lung or respiratory infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis)
  • Intestinal bleeding, constipation, upper abdominal pain, indigestion, flatulence, dry mouth
  • Hair loss, skin redness, dry skin, itching, skin discoloration, skin peeling, skin inflammation, nail disorders
  • Joint, limb, chest, or back pain
  • Swelling of limbs, general feeling of being unwell
  • Liver problems (seen in blood tests), increased bilirubin in blood
RARE
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome (painful red/purple rash, blisters, sores on mucous membranes, especially with light sensitivity, respiratory infections, or fever)
  • Angioedema (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing/breathing, itching, rash - seek immediate medical help)
  • Blood infection, urinary tract infection, skin infection, nasal and throat infections, fungal infections (including oral thrush), flu, gastroenteritis, tooth abscess
  • Lumps under the skin (lipomas)
  • Decreased blood cell counts including platelets, thinned blood (seen in blood tests)
  • Allergy
  • Diabetes, decreased blood potassium, malnutrition, increased blood triglycerides
  • Confusion, panic attacks, depression, decreased libido
  • Speech difficulties, impaired memory, loss of coordination, balance problems, fainting, nerve damage (neuropathy), sensory disorders
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Dizziness, ear pain
  • Irregular heartbeat and palpitations (arrhythmias), chest pain, heart attack
  • Deep vein blood clots, increased or decreased blood pressure, hot flashes, cold extremities, purple spots on skin
  • Pulmonary embolism, collapsed lung, coughing up blood, asthma, shortness of breath on exertion
  • Intestinal obstruction, fluid in abdomen, inflammation of intestines, stomach, or esophagus, lower abdominal pain, heartburn, bloody stools
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Skin sores and blisters, sun-related skin reaction, redness in palms, facial swelling or pain
  • Swollen or stiff joints, bone pain, muscle weakness or stiffness
  • Fluid in kidneys, frequent nighttime urination, incontinence, blood in urine, increased blood creatinine (signs of kidney problems)
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Swelling (edema), chills and stiffness
  • Decreased blood sodium, magnesium or calcium, increased blood sugar
  • Nerve pain
  • Ringing or buzzing in ears (tinnitus), hearing loss
  • Vein inflammation
  • Hiccups, changed voice
  • Mouth pain or abnormal sensation in mouth, jaw pain
  • Sweating, night sweats
  • Muscle twitching
  • Difficulty urinating, blood or protein in urine
  • Bruising or reaction at injection site (from other injected medicines)
  • Narrowing or blockage of tear ducts
  • Liver failure
  • Inflammation causing bile flow problems (cholestatic hepatitis)
  • Specific changes in ECG (QT prolongation)
  • Certain types of arrhythmia (including ventricular fibrillation, torsade de pointes, and bradycardia)
  • Eye inflammation causing pain and possible vision problems
  • Skin inflammation with red, flaky patches due to immune system disease
  • Very severe skin reactions such as rash, sores and blisters (e.g. in mouth, nose, genitals, hands, feet and eyes)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to capecitabine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have had severe reactions to other cancer medicines called fluoropyrimidines before.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not take if you have very low white blood cell or platelet counts.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver or kidney disease.

  • Do not take if you completely lack the DPD enzyme, which helps your body break down certain medicines.
  • Do not take if you are currently being treated with brivudine (for shingles or chickenpox) or have been treated with it in the last 4 weeks.
