How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your exact dose based on your body surface area. Typically, it is 1250 mg per square meter of body surface, taken twice a day (morning and evening).

Method

Take the tablets whole with water within 30 minutes after breakfast and dinner. Do not crush or break them. You usually take them for 14 days, followed by a 7-day break.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2500 mg per square meter of body surface area, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea (more than 4 bowel movements a day or at night)
  • Vomiting (more than once a day)
  • Nausea (loss of appetite, eating much less than usual)
  • Mouth sores (pain, redness, swelling, or sores in your mouth or throat)
  • Hand-foot syndrome (pain, swelling, redness, or tingling in hands and/or feet)
  • Stomach pain
  • Rash, dry or itchy skin
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Low white or red blood cell count (seen in blood tests)
  • Dehydration, weight loss
  • Trouble sleeping, depression
  • Headache, drowsiness, dizziness, strange skin feelings (numbness or tingling), changes in taste
  • Eye irritation, more tears, red eyes (pink eye)
  • Vein inflammation
  • Shortness of breath, nosebleeds, cough, runny nose
  • Cold sores or other herpes infections
  • Lung or breathing infections (like pneumonia or bronchitis)
  • Bleeding from the gut, constipation, upper belly pain, indigestion, gas, dry mouth
  • Hair loss, red skin, dry skin, itching, skin discoloration, peeling skin, skin inflammation, nail problems
  • Joint, limb, chest or back pain
  • Fever
  • Swollen limbs, feeling unwell
  • Liver problems (seen in blood tests) and increased bilirubin in blood
RARE
  • Infection (signs of bacterial or viral infection, etc.)
  • Chest pain (especially during effort)
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome (painful red or purple skin rash spreading with blisters, sores on mucous membranes, light sensitivity, respiratory infections, fever)
  • Angioedema (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, itching, rash)
  • Blood infection, urinary tract infection, skin infection, nose and throat infections, fungal infections (including mouth), flu, stomach flu, tooth abscess
  • Lumps under the skin (lipoma)
  • Low blood cell counts (including platelets), thinning blood (seen in blood tests)
  • Allergy
  • Diabetes, low potassium, malnutrition, high blood fats
  • Confusion, panic attacks, sadness, decreased sex drive
  • Speech problems, memory loss, loss of movement coordination, balance problems, fainting, nerve damage (neuropathy) and feeling problems
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Vertigo, ear pain
  • Irregular heartbeats and palpitations (arrhythmia), chest pain and heart attack
  • Deep vein blood clots, high or low blood pressure, hot flashes, cold limbs, purple spots on skin
  • Lung blood clots (pulmonary embolism), collapsed lung, coughing up blood, asthma, shortness of breath during exercise
  • Blocked bowel, fluid buildup in the belly, inflammation of small or large bowel, stomach or esophagus, lower belly pain, stomach upset, heartburn, bloody stools
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Skin sores and blisters, sun sensitivity reaction, red palms, swollen or painful face
  • Swollen or stiff joints, bone pain, muscle weakness or stiffness
  • Fluid buildup in kidneys, frequent night urination, urinary leakage, blood in urine, increased creatinine in blood (sign of kidney problems)
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Swelling (edema), chills and stiffness
  • Low sodium, magnesium or calcium in blood, high blood sugar
  • Nerve pain
  • Ringing or buzzing in ears (tinnitus), hearing loss
  • Hiccups, voice changes
  • Pain or strange feeling in mouth, jaw pain
  • Sweating, night sweats
  • Muscle spasms
  • Difficulty urinating, blood or protein in urine
  • Bruises or reaction at injection site
  • Narrowing or blockage of tear duct
  • Liver failure
  • Inflammation affecting bile flow (cholestatic hepatitis)
  • Certain changes in heart's electrical activity (QT prolongation)
  • Certain heart rhythm problems (including ventricular fibrillation, torsade de pointes, slow heart rate)
  • Eye inflammation causing pain and possibly vision problems
  • Skin inflammation due to immune system disease (red, flaky patches on skin)
  • Very severe skin reactions (like rash, sores, and blisters that can include mouth, nose, genitals, hands, feet, and eyes)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to capecitabine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have had severe reactions to similar cancer medicines (like fluorouracil) in the past.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not take if you have very low white blood cell or platelet counts.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver or kidney problems.

  • Do not take if your body completely lacks the DPD enzyme, which helps process this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are currently using brivudine (a medicine for shingles or chickenpox) or have used it in the last 4 weeks.
