How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine the dose based on your body surface area, the type of cancer treatment, and other ongoing treatments.

Method

This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse as an injection or infusion into a vein, or as an injection into a muscle.

Important

When given into a vein, calcium folinate should not be injected faster than 160 mg per minute.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea (when used with fluoropyrimidines)
  • Vomiting (when used with fluoropyrimidines)
  • Severe diarrhea (when used with fluoropyrimidines)
  • Dehydration, possibly due to diarrhea (when used with fluoropyrimidines)
  • Inflammation of the intestinal and oral mucous membranes (mucositis/stomatitis), including life-threatening cases (when used with fluoropyrimidines)
  • Decrease in blood cell count, including life-threatening cases (when used with fluoropyrimidines)
  • Redness and swelling of the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, which may involve skin peeling (hand-foot syndrome) (when used with fluoropyrimidines)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (itchy rash, swelling of hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, mouth or throat, dizziness)
  • Fever
  • Insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
  • Agitation
  • Depression
  • Digestive problems
  • Increased epileptic seizures in patients with epilepsy
  • Elevated blood ammonia levels

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to calcium folinate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have too few red blood cells (anemia).
  • Do not use this medicine with certain cancer drugs (like 5-fluorouracil) if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as it may harm the baby.
  • This medicine must not be given directly into the spinal cord or brain (intrathecally).
  • Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy or kidney problems.
