How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right dose and how often you get this medicine, based on your illness and other treatments.

Method

This medicine can be given as a shot into a vein or muscle, or as a drip (infusion) into a vein, in which case it is diluted first.

Important

There is no general maximum daily dose; your doctor will decide the dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bone marrow failure (can be life-threatening).
  • Inflammation of the gut and mouth lining (can be life-threatening).
  • Feeling sick, throwing up, and diarrhea (with monthly dosing).
  • Severe diarrhea and dehydration (with weekly dosing).
  • Redness and swelling of the palms or soles of the feet, possibly with skin peeling (hand-foot syndrome).
RARE
  • Fever.
  • Trouble sleeping.
  • Feeling restless and sad (after high doses).
  • More seizures if you have epilepsy.
  • Stomach and bowel problems (after high doses).
  • Sudden itchy rash (hives), swelling of hands, feet, ankles, face, lips, mouth, or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, feeling faint (signs of a very severe allergic reaction).
  • Red, target-like patches on the body, often with blisters, skin peeling, sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes (severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to calcium folinate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have anemia caused by a lack of vitamin B12.
  • Do not use with certain cancer medicines if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • This medicine must not be injected directly into the spinal fluid (in the spine).
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease or epilepsy.

  • Do not use this medicine with fluorouracil if you have had stomach or bowel problems because of it.
  • If you are taking calcium folinate with fluorouracil, tell your doctor if you have had radiation therapy, stomach or bowel problems, mouth sores, are elderly, or feel very weak.
