How to Use

Dosage

The usual recommended dose for adults is one 150 mg tablet once daily.

Method

Take Bupropion Accord tablets in the morning. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not chew, crush, or split them.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 300 mg, taken once a day, if your doctor increases your dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping (remember to take Bupropion Accord in the morning).
  • Headache.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Nausea, vomiting.
  • Fever, dizziness, itching, sweating, and rash (sometimes due to an allergic reaction).
  • Tremor, shakiness, weakness, tiredness, and chest pain.
  • Anxiety or agitation.
  • Abdominal pain or other stomach problems (like constipation), changes in taste, and loss of appetite.
  • Increased blood pressure (sometimes severe) and flushing.
  • Ringing in the ears and vision problems.
RARE
  • Seizures.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to bupropion or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are taking other medicines that contain bupropion.
  • Do not take if you have been diagnosed with epilepsy or have had seizures.
  • Do not take if you have or have had an eating disorder (e.g., bulimia or anorexia nervosa).
  • Do not take if you have a brain tumor.

  • Do not take if you regularly drink a lot of alcohol and have recently stopped or plan to stop drinking.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not take if you have recently stopped taking sedatives or plan to stop during Bupropion Accord treatment.
  • Do not take if you are using or have used MAOI antidepressants in the last 14 days.
  • Tell your doctor if you have Brugada syndrome (a rare heart rhythm condition) or if sudden heart death has occurred in your family.
  • Bupropion Accord is not recommended for people under 18 due to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes treated with insulin or tablets, or if you have had a severe head injury, as these increase the risk of seizures.
  • Tell your doctor if you have bipolar disorder, as this medicine may trigger episodes of the illness.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other antidepressants, as combining them with Bupropion Accord can lead to a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, as this can increase the chance of side effects.
  • If you have suicidal thoughts at any point during treatment, contact your doctor immediately or go to a hospital.
  • Do not use Bupropion Accord if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, unless advised by your doctor.
  • If Bupropion Accord makes you feel confused or dizzy, do not drive or operate tools or machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider risk of convulsions and numerous potential interactions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases risk of falls. (updated 12.2.2024)
