How to Use

Dosage

Start with one 150 mg tablet once a day; your doctor may increase it to one 300 mg tablet daily if needed.

Method

Take the tablet whole in the morning; do not chew, crush, or divide it.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 300 mg, taken once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Trouble sleeping (remember to take your medicine in the morning)
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting
  • Fever, dizziness, itching, sweating, and skin rash (sometimes a sign of an allergic reaction)
  • Shaking, trembling, weakness, tiredness, and chest pain
  • Anxiety or irritability
  • Stomach pain or other stomach problems (like constipation), changes in taste, and loss of appetite
  • Increased blood pressure (sometimes serious) and flushing (redness in the face)
  • Ringing in the ears and vision problems
RARE
  • Feeling depressed or low mood
  • Feeling confused
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Heart palpitations or a fast heartbeat
  • Weight loss
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Fainting
  • Muscle twitching, stiff muscles, uncontrolled movements, or problems with walking/coordination
  • Restlessness, irritability, hostility, aggression, unusual dreams, numbness or tingling, or memory problems
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) or liver inflammation
  • Severe allergic reactions (such as rash with joint and muscle pain, or swelling in the face, tongue, and difficulty breathing)
  • Changes in blood sugar levels
  • More or less frequent urination or involuntary urination
  • Severe rash in the mouth or on other parts of the body that can be life-threatening
  • Worsening of psoriasis
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Feeling unreal or strange, hallucinations, delusions, or strong suspicion
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Loss of touch with reality (psychosis), false beliefs, or a strong panic attack
  • Stuttering
  • Decrease in blood cells (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets)
  • Low sodium levels in the blood
  • Changes in mental state (restlessness, hallucinations, coma) and other symptoms like fever, fast heart rate, unstable blood pressure, muscle stiffness, or gut problems, especially when taken with other antidepressants (Serotonin Syndrome)
  • Lupus-like rash or worsening lupus symptoms (rash or lesions, especially in sun-exposed areas)
  • Acute Generalized Exanthematous Pustulosis (AGEP) (a rash with pus-filled spots or blisters)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to bupropion or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are already taking other medicines that contain bupropion.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have epilepsy or have had seizures; if you have a seizure during treatment, stop taking the medicine immediately and contact your doctor.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have or have had an eating disorder, such as bulimia or anorexia.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a brain tumor.

  • Do not take this medicine if you drink a lot of alcohol and have recently stopped or plan to stop drinking; do not suddenly stop alcohol use without medical advice, as this can cause seizures.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have recently stopped taking sedatives or plan to stop them during this treatment.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have taken MAOI antidepressants in the last 14 days.
  • Tell your doctor if you have Brugada syndrome (a rare heart condition) or if there have been sudden deaths in your family.
  • This medicine is not recommended for people under 18 years old, as it may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts in this age group.
  • If your depression worsens or you have thoughts of harming yourself, contact your doctor or go to a hospital right away.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding, unless your doctor specifically recommends it.
  • If you feel confused or dizzy, do not drive or operate machinery.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine or change your dose without first talking to your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider risk of convulsions and numerous potential interactions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Increases risk of falls. (updated 12.2.2024)
