How to Use

Dosage

Apply one patch to your skin and change it every seven days, preferably at the same time of day.

Method

Apply the patch to a clean, dry, non-irritated area of skin on your upper arm, side of chest, or upper back. The medicine is absorbed through your skin.

Important

Do not apply more than two patches at a time. The maximum total dose is 40 micrograms per hour.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, feeling dizzy or sleepy.
  • Constipation, feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting).
  • Itchy skin, redness, or a rash where the patch is applied.
  • Not feeling hungry, confusion, anxiety, or trouble sleeping.
  • Shortness of breath, stomach pain, diarrhea, or dry mouth.
  • Sweating, feeling tired or unusually weak, and swelling in hands or feet.
RARE
  • Serious allergic reactions with swelling of the face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing, or severe widespread rash.
  • Mood swings, feeling very happy, hallucinations, or nightmares.
  • Memory problems, fainting, or blurred vision.
  • Chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, or changes in blood pressure.
  • Difficulty urinating or withdrawal symptoms (like agitation, anxiety, sweating, shaking) if you stop using the medicine.
  • Seizures or muscle twitching.
  • Breathing pauses during sleep (sleep apnea).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to buprenorphine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems.
  • Do not use if you are taking certain other strong pain medicines (MAOIs) or have taken them in the last two weeks.
  • Avoid alcohol and other medicines that make you sleepy, as this can worsen side effects.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor tells you to.

  • Do not expose the patch to very high temperatures (like heating pads or saunas), as this can cause too much medicine to be absorbed.
  • Do not cut or divide the patch, and do not use more than two patches at a time (maximum 40 micrograms per hour).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Low transdermal efficacy in cachectic patients. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. (updated 24.3.2025)
