How to Use

Dosage

Apply one Bupremyl patch to your skin and change it every seven days, ideally at the same time of day.

Method

Bupremyl is a patch you apply to clean, dry, unbroken skin on your upper arm, upper chest, upper back, or side. The medicine passes through your skin into your bloodstream.

Important

Do not cut or split the patch, and do not use more than two patches at the same time.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, dizziness, feeling sleepy
  • Constipation, feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting)
  • Itching, red skin, rash, swelling where the patch is placed
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling confused, depressed, anxious, nervous, or shaky
  • Shortness of breath
  • Stomach pain or discomfort, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth
  • Sweating, other skin changes
  • Feeling tired or unusually weak, muscle weakness, swelling in hands, ankles, or feet
RARE
  • Heart issues (e.g., chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, circulation collapse)
  • Very slow or difficult breathing, or breathing stopping during sleep
  • Memory loss, migraine, fainting, trouble focusing or coordinating
  • Changes in taste or speech, less feeling in skin, tingling or numbness in hands or feet
  • Dry eyes, blurry vision, ringing in ears, feeling dizzy or spinning
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Cough, hiccups, wheezing
  • Gas, weight loss, dry skin, muscle cramps, aches, and pains
  • Trouble urinating or controlling urine
  • Fever, chills
  • More falls or accidents
  • Withdrawal signs (like being restless, anxious, sweaty, shaky) if you stop the medicine
  • Abnormal liver test results
  • Mental health changes (e.g., mood swings, hallucinations, nightmares, aggression), balance issues
  • Swelling of eyelids or face, very small pupils
  • Worsening asthma
  • Dizziness when standing up, trouble swallowing, runny nose
  • Erection problems, flu-like feelings, being very thirsty, dark urine
  • Getting addicted to the medicine, muscle twitching, ear pain, skin bumps or blisters
  • Seizures
  • Belly pain with fever, vomiting (signs of gut inflammation)
  • Increased pain sensitivity, repeated upper belly pain (gallbladder issues)
  • Feeling detached from your body
  • Babies having withdrawal symptoms if their mother used this medicine during pregnancy
  • Skin reactions from contact (like burning rash), skin color changes
  • Needing more medicine over time for the same pain relief (tolerance)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Bupremyl if you are allergic to buprenorphine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use Bupremyl if you have severe breathing problems.
  • Do not use Bupremyl if you are taking or have taken MAO inhibitor medicines (for depression) in the last two weeks.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking antidepressants, as using Bupremyl with them can cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver problems, as Bupremyl's effects may change.

  • Do not use Bupremyl if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise.
  • Bupremyl can affect your ability to react. Do not drive or operate machines if you feel dizzy, drowsy, or have blurred vision.
  • Remove the patch and contact your doctor immediately if you experience sudden wheezing, difficulty swallowing or breathing, swelling of the face or lips, rash, or itching, especially if it spreads across your body, as these can be signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Low transdermal efficacy in cachectic patients. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. (updated 24.3.2025)
