How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right patch strength for you. Apply one patch to your skin and change it every seven days, preferably at the same time each day.

Method

Apply the patch to a clean, dry, hairless skin area, such as the outer upper arm, upper chest, or upper back. Press the patch firmly against your skin for 30 seconds to ensure it sticks well.

Important

Do not use more than two patches at the same time. The maximum total dose is 40 micrograms per hour.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, dizziness, and feeling sleepy.
  • Constipation, feeling sick to your stomach (nausea), or throwing up (vomiting).
  • Itchy skin, or a rash, redness, or swelling where the patch was applied.
  • Feeling tired or unusually weak, with possible muscle weakness or swelling in hands, ankles, or feet.
  • Feeling confused, anxious, or having trouble sleeping.
RARE
  • Severe breathing problems or very low blood pressure.
  • Allergic reactions like sudden wheezing, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, eyelids, or lips, or a widespread rash.
  • Seizures or convulsions.
  • Memory loss, trouble concentrating, or problems with balance.
  • Changes in mood or personality, or seeing/hearing things that are not real (hallucinations).
  • Heart problems such as chest pain or an irregular heartbeat.
  • Sleep-related breathing problems, like pauses in breathing during sleep (sleep apnea).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Buprefarm if you are allergic to buprenorphine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems, sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep), or seizures.
  • Do not use if you have a drug dependency or if you are using this to treat withdrawal symptoms from drugs or alcohol.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking MAO inhibitors (a type of antidepressant) or have taken them in the last two weeks, or if you are taking certain antidepressants, as this can cause a serious reaction (serotonin syndrome).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have myasthenia gravis (a muscle weakness disease), a head injury, or high pressure in your brain.

  • Do not use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18 years old. Discuss with your doctor.
  • Avoid alcohol, as it can worsen side effects and make you feel unwell.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Low transdermal efficacy in cachectic patients. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. (updated 24.3.2025)
