How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you which patch strength to use. Only use one patch at a time.

Method

Stick one patch onto clean, healthy skin on your upper arm, upper chest, or upper back. Change it every seven days, always at the same time of day.

Important

Do not use more than two patches at the same time. The highest dose is 40 micrograms per hour.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness
  • Constipation, feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
  • Itchy skin
  • Rash, redness, itching, inflammation or swelling where the patch was applied
  • Loss of appetite
  • Confusion, depression, anxiety, trouble sleeping, nervousness, shaking
  • Shortness of breath
  • Stomach pain or discomfort, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth
  • Sweating, rash, sudden skin breakouts
  • Tiredness, unusual weakness, muscle weakness, swollen hands, ankles or feet
RARE
  • Restlessness, agitation, feeling very good, hallucinations, nightmares, reduced sex drive, aggression
  • Changes in taste, speech problems, reduced sense of pain or touch, tingling or numbness
  • Memory loss, migraine, fainting, trouble concentrating or coordinating movements
  • Dry eyes, blurred vision
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears, feeling dizzy or spinning
  • High or low blood pressure, chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Cough, hiccups, wheezing (raspy, whistling breathing)
  • Gas in stomach
  • Weight loss
  • Dry skin
  • Muscle cramps, pains and aches
  • Urinary incontinence, difficulty starting urination, difficulty emptying bladder completely
  • Fever
  • Increased accidents (e.g. falls)
  • Withdrawal symptoms, such as agitation, anxiety, sweating or trembling, when stopping Buprefarm treatment
  • Contact dermatitis (skin rash with inflammation and burning sensation)
  • Angina (severe chest pain related to heart problems)
  • Psychotic disorder
  • Balance problems
  • Swelling of face or eyelids, narrowed pupils
  • Breathing difficulties, worsening asthma, hyperventilation
  • Feeling faint, especially when standing up
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Local allergic reaction with clear swelling (stop treatment if this happens)
  • Swelling or irritation inside the nose
  • Weakened erection, sexual dysfunction
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Skin redness
  • Dehydration
  • Small muscle twitching
  • Mood swings
  • Ear pain
  • Pus-filled blisters
  • Breathing problems during sleep (sleep apnea)
  • Seizures, spasms, or convulsions
  • Inflammation of the intestinal wall. Symptoms may include fever, vomiting, and stomach pain or discomfort.
  • Stomach pain or discomfort due to colic (acute abdominal pain)
  • Personality change (feeling detached from oneself)
  • Withdrawal symptoms in babies (if mother used during pregnancy): high-pitched crying, irritability, restlessness, tremors, feeding difficulties, sweating, and failure to gain weight.
  • Skin discoloration

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to buprenorphine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems.
  • Do not use if you have a drug addiction.
  • Do not use if you are taking or have taken MAO inhibitors (a type of medicine for depression) in the last two weeks.
  • This medicine is not for children or teenagers under 18 years old.

  • Do not use if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding, unless your doctor says it's okay.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had seizures or fits.
  • Tell your doctor if you have sleep apnea (when your breathing stops during sleep).
  • Tell your doctor if you have serious liver problems.
  • Do not drink alcohol while using Buprefarm, as it can make side effects worse and affect how you react.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Low transdermal efficacy in cachectic patients. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. (updated 24.3.2025)
