How to Use

Dosage

For active disease: 3 capsules (9 mg) once daily in the morning for 8 weeks. For maintenance (microscopic colitis): 2 capsules (6 mg) once daily in the morning.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water. Do not chew or crush them. If you have difficulty swallowing, you may open the capsule and mix its contents with a tablespoon of apple sauce, but do not chew the contents.

Important

The maximum dose is 3 capsules (9 mg) per day for active disease treatment.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low potassium levels in the blood
  • Behavioral changes such as nervousness, sleeplessness, mood swings, and depression
  • Unusually fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Indigestion
  • Rash
  • Muscle cramps
  • Menstrual problems
  • Fat accumulation in the upper body or face, skin changes, fluid retention (known as Cushing's syndrome)
RARE
  • Tremors
  • Restlessness, feeling uneasy, and strong urge to constantly move (psychomotor hyperactivity)
  • Anxiety
  • Aggressiveness
  • Clouding of the eye lens (including the back of the lens), glaucoma (eye pressure disease), blurred vision
  • Bluish-purple discoloration of the skin caused by bleeding under the skin
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Slowed growth

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to budesonide or any other ingredients in the medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had any of the following conditions: bacterial, fungal, or viral infection, liver disease, bone thinning (osteoporosis), stomach ulcer, high blood pressure, diabetes, or eye disease (e.g., glaucoma).
  • Avoid chickenpox or measles, as these diseases can be more severe with this medicine. Tell your doctor if you get an infection.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience blurred vision or other vision problems.
  • Do not drink grapefruit juice during treatment, as it can increase the amount of medicine in your body.

  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, talk to your doctor before using this medicine, as it may affect the baby.
  • Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly without your doctor's advice, as you may become unwell.
