How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your dose. Typically, 25–100 mg twice daily for adults and adolescents weighing 50 kg or more; 0.5–2 mg per kg body weight twice daily for children and adolescents weighing 20–50 kg; and 0.5–2.5 mg per kg body weight twice daily for children weighing 10–20 kg.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. You can take the medicine with or without food.

Important

Generally, no more than 200 mg per day for adults and adolescents; the dose may be lower for those with liver problems.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drowsiness or dizziness

  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Feeling very tired (fatigue)
  • Convulsions or a spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Nausea, vomiting, or constipation
  • Depression, anxiety, trouble sleeping, or irritability
  • Nose and throat infections (like a common cold), or cough
  • Decreased appetite
  • Restlessness and hyperactivity (in children)
RARE
  • Allergic reactions
  • Unusual thoughts, feeling aggressive, or agitated (psychotic disorder)
  • Thoughts or attempts of self-harm or suicide
  • Low white blood cells (neutropenia), seen in blood tests
  • Severe widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to brivaracetam, similar medicines like levetiracetam or piracetam, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Stop taking and seek urgent medical help if you develop a severe rash with blisters or peeling skin, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, or genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can worsen side effects like drowsiness.

  • Do not drive, cycle, or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you, as it can cause drowsiness or dizziness.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as the effects on the baby are unknown.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first, as stopping suddenly can increase your seizures.
  • Not recommended for children under 2 years old.
