How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the right dose. You will take your daily dose in two equal parts, about 12 hours apart.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. You can take this medicine with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is usually 200 mg. Your doctor will determine the right maximum for you, especially if you have liver problems or are a child.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sleepy or dizzy
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Feeling very tired
  • Seizures, spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Nausea, vomiting, constipation
  • Depression, anxiety, trouble sleeping, irritability
  • Nose and throat infections (like a common cold), cough
  • Loss of appetite
  • Restlessness and hyperactivity (in children)
RARE
  • Allergic reactions
  • Unusual thoughts or losing touch with reality (psychosis), aggression, agitation
  • Thoughts or attempts to harm yourself or commit suicide (tell your doctor right away)
  • Low white blood cell count (neutropenia), seen in blood tests
  • Severe rash with blisters and peeling skin, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson Syndrome)

Important Warnings

  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, tell your doctor right away.
  • If you have liver problems, your doctor may need to change your dose.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 2 years old.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking rifampicin (for bacterial infections) or St. John's wort (for depression or anxiety), as these can affect this medicine.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can worsen side effects.

  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as its effects on the baby are not known.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first, as stopping abruptly can increase your seizures.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy, dizzy, or tired, especially when you first start taking it or when your dose changes. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get a severe skin rash, peeling skin, blisters, or mouth sores, as these can be signs of a serious reaction like Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.
