How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your daily dose, which should be split into two equal doses taken about 12 hours apart. For adults and adolescents weighing 50 kg or more, the recommended dose is 25–100 mg twice daily. For adolescents and children weighing 20–50 kg, the dose is 0.5–2 mg per kg body weight twice daily. For children weighing 10–20 kg, the dose is 0.5–2.5 mg per kg body weight twice daily.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth, with or without food. Swallow whole tablets with a glass of water. If you have the 100 mg tablets, they have score lines and can be divided into four equal doses; swallow the whole or divided tablets with a glass of water.

Important

For adults and adolescents weighing 50 kg or more, the maximum daily dose is 150 mg. For adolescents and children weighing 20–50 kg, the maximum daily dose is 3 mg per kg body weight. For children weighing 10–20 kg, the maximum daily dose is 4 mg per kg body weight.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drowsiness or dizziness
  • Flu
  • Feeling very tired (fatigue)
  • Seizures, spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Nausea and vomiting, constipation
  • Depression, anxiety, trouble sleeping (insomnia), irritability
  • Nose and throat infections (like common cold), cough
  • Decreased appetite
  • Restlessness and hyperactivity (psychomotor hyperactivity) (in children)
RARE
  • Allergic reactions
  • Abnormal thoughts and/or loss of contact with reality (psychotic disorder), aggression, nervous agitation (restlessness)
  • Thoughts or attempts to harm yourself or commit suicide: tell your doctor immediately
  • Decrease in white blood cells (neutropenia), shown in blood tests
  • Widespread rash with blisters and skin peeling, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to brivaracetam or similar medicines.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor immediately if you develop a severe skin rash, blistering, or mouth sores.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver problems, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 2 years old.

  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially rifampicin (for infections) or St. John's Wort (a herbal remedy).
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can worsen side effects.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss with your doctor about contraception or if this medicine is suitable for you.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can increase seizures.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy or dizzy. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
