Botox is given as an injection into muscles, the bladder wall, or deep into the skin, usually in several small spots by a doctor.

Important

The maximum amount of Botox given in one treatment session usually does not go over 300 to 400 units, but this depends on your specific condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain, swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site.
  • Muscle weakness or tingling in the treated area.
  • Headache or dizziness.
  • Dry eyes or drooping eyelids (when injected near eyes).
  • Urinary tract infection or painful urination (when injected for bladder issues).
RARE
  • Toxin spreading to other parts of the body, causing muscle weakness, trouble swallowing, or breathing problems, which can be severe.
  • Serious heart problems like a heart attack or irregular heartbeat.
  • Seizures.
  • Pneumonia (lung infection) if food or liquids accidentally go into the lungs.
  • Double vision or blurry vision.

Important Warnings

  • Contact your doctor right away if you have trouble breathing, swallowing, or speaking after the injection.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you get hives, swelling (especially of the face or throat), wheezing, feel faint, or have severe shortness of breath, as these can be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • Do not use Botox if you are allergic to botulinum toxin type A or any other ingredients in the medicine.
  • Do not use Botox if you have an infection at the spot where the injection is planned.
  • If you are being treated for bladder leakage and have a bladder infection, cannot empty your bladder, or are unwilling to use a catheter if needed.
