How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 1.3 mg per square meter of body surface area, given twice a week.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as an injection either into a vein (intravenously) or under the skin (subcutaneously) in the thigh or abdomen. Intravenous injections are given quickly, in 3-5 seconds.

The maximum daily dose is determined by your doctor based on your response to treatment and any side effects.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nerve problems (pain, numbness, tingling in hands/feet)
  • Low red or white blood cell count
  • Fever, fatigue, weakness, chills, general discomfort
  • Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, diarrhea
  • Stomach pain, heartburn, bloating, dry mouth, mouth/throat sores
  • Muscle or bone pain, cramps
  • Headache, dizziness, fainting, blurred vision
  • Sleep problems, anxiety, mood changes, confusion
  • Rashes, itching, skin redness, shingles
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Kidney problems
  • Nosebleeds
  • Body swelling
  • Infections (like pneumonia, flu, respiratory infections)
RARE
  • Serious heart problems (heart failure, heart attack, chest pain, abnormal rhythm)
  • Stroke, paralysis, severe nerve inflammation (Guillain-Barré syndrome)
  • Severe allergic reactions (breathing problems, swelling of face/throat)
  • Liver problems (hepatitis, liver bleeding, yellow skin/eyes)
  • Blood clots in lungs or veins, poor circulation
  • Severe skin reactions, skin wounds
  • Changes in vision, partial or complete vision loss, eye infections
  • Hearing loss, ringing in ears
  • Pancreatitis, bile duct issues
  • Kidney cancer
  • Bloody stools, bleeding from mouth/vagina
  • Hormonal problems, thyroid issues, insulin resistance
  • Swollen lymph glands, joint stiffness
  • Hair loss, changes in hair
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Increased appetite, thirst
  • Fractures, muscle breakdown
  • Disorders of blood cells (increased platelets), microangiopathy
  • Abnormal reaction to blood transfusion

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to bortezomib, boron, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have certain severe lung or heart problems.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you experience muscle cramps, weakness, confusion, vision problems, seizures, severe headaches, shortness of breath, swollen feet, changes in heart rate, high blood pressure, tiredness, fainting, cough, or chest tightness.
  • You will have regular blood tests to check your blood cell counts before and during treatment.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless clearly necessary and discussed with your doctor. Women who can get pregnant must use effective birth control during treatment and for 8 months after. Men must use effective birth control during treatment and for 5 months after.
