Method

Bleomycin Baxter is usually given as an injection into a muscle, or sometimes into a vein (including a long-term infusion) or an artery, or into the lung cavity; only healthcare professionals administer this medicine.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Skin redness, itching, skin stretch marks (striations), blisters. Skin color changes. Swollen and sore fingertips.
  • Headache. Loss of appetite. Weight loss. Nausea and vomiting. Mouth and mucous membrane inflammation. Rash, hives, severe skin redness. Hardened and thickened skin, swelling. Hair loss. Fever on injection day, stiffness, feeling unwell.
RARE
  • Decreased bone marrow function, which can lead to a reduction in blood cells and platelets. Bleeding. Dizziness, mental confusion. Low blood pressure. Inflammation at the corner of the mouth. Diarrhea. Nail changes and discoloration. Blisters in pressure areas (e.g., elbows). Muscle pain, joint pain and aches. Pain in the tumor area. Local reactions at the injection site, such as blood vessel inflammation.
  • Febrile neutropenia (fever due to decreased white blood cells). Pericarditis, chest pain, heart attack. Blood vessel changes that may cause bleeding between brain membranes, brain hemorrhage or stroke, blood clots in small blood vessels, anemia with acute kidney failure (hemolytic-uremic syndrome), brain blood vessel inflammation. Feeling of cold fingers and toes, and their noticeable paleness (Raynaud's phenomenon). Arterial blockages (in large blood vessels). Liver dysfunction. Connective tissue disease where the skin hardens and thickens (systemic sclerosis).
  • Severe metabolic and electrolyte imbalance due to rapid tumor breakdown (tumor lysis syndrome).
  • Severe allergic reaction. Blood clot in the leg. Respiratory failure. Pulmonary embolism. Hepatitis. Lung inflammation caused by inhaling viruses, gases, or smoke. Lower respiratory tract lung disease primarily affecting the walls of the alveoli. Liver inflammation. Skin inflammation, itching with simultaneous longitudinal stripes, usually on the back or flanks. Red, ring-shaped, and blistering rash (erythema multiforme). Fetal death. Chills. Fluid accumulation in feet and lower legs. Pain at the injection site.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to bleomycin.
  • Do not use if you have a lung infection, severe lung problems, or circulatory issues in your lungs, such as pulmonary fibrosis (a lung disease where lung tissue turns into scar tissue) or a blood clot in the lung.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have received radiation therapy to the chest, as this greatly increases the risk of lung problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have other lung diseases, as this increases the risk of lung problems.

  • If you are elderly, your doctor will closely monitor you for signs of lung problems, as sensitivity to Bleomycin Baxter increases with age, leading to a higher risk.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney failure, as this increases the risk of lung problems.
  • If you need anesthesia for surgery, inform the anesthesiologist that you are receiving Bleomycin Baxter, as too much oxygen can increase the risk of lung problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have joint problems, as rheumatic joint symptoms may worsen during Bleomycin Baxter treatment.
  • If you are a man or woman of childbearing age, discuss pregnancy prevention with your doctor, as this medicine can affect fertility.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience breathing difficulties or pain when breathing in during or after Bleomycin Baxter treatment.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you get a fever, chills, breathing difficulties, wheezing, rattling, or feel confused, as these can be signs of an allergic reaction, which may appear hours after the dose.
  • If you have AIDS and develop skin problems, your doctor will stop the treatment to prevent recurrence.
  • If you are receiving other cancer medicines or radiation therapy at the same time, ulceration of mucous membranes may worsen; these reactions can appear later in treatment, usually during the second or third week.
