How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 5 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase it to 10 mg daily, and sometimes up to 20 mg. For mild high blood pressure, your doctor might start you on half of a 5 mg tablet (2.5 mg).

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, preferably with breakfast. Do not chew the tablets. The tablet can be divided into equal halves.

Important

For patients with severe kidney or liver problems, the maximum daily dose is 10 mg of bisoprolol.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Tiredness, dizziness, headache (usually appear at the start of treatment and disappear within 1-2 weeks)
  • Coldness or numbness in hands and feet, worsening of Raynaud's syndrome or intermittent claudication (leg pain when walking)
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation
RARE
  • Depression, sleep disorders
  • Slow heart rate, heart conduction problems, worsening of heart failure (shortness of breath and swelling)
  • Dizziness or fainting when standing up suddenly (due to low blood pressure)
  • Breathing difficulties (bronchospasm) in people with asthma or chronic lung disease
  • Muscle weakness, muscle cramps, joint pain
  • Weakness, loss of strength
  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  • Lupus-like syndrome (fever, muscle/joint pain, skin changes)
  • Nightmares or hallucinations
  • Decreased tear flow, dry eyes (important for contact lens users)
  • Fainting (syncope)
  • Impaired hearing
  • Increased triglycerides, decreased blood sugar
  • Increased liver enzyme levels
  • Liver inflammation (usually causes upper abdominal pain)
  • Allergic skin reactions (itching, redness, rash)
  • Erectile dysfunction (impotence)
  • Conjunctivitis (redness and irritation of the eyes)
  • Worsening or appearance of psoriasis
  • Hair loss

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to bisoprolol or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have untreated heart failure, very low blood pressure, a very slow heart rate, or heart conduction problems without a pacemaker.
  • Do not use if you have severe asthma or a serious chronic lung disease.
  • Do not use if you have severe circulation problems in your arms or legs, or Raynaud's syndrome.
  • Do not use if you have metabolic acidosis (too much acid in your blood) or an untreated tumor of the adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma).

  • Do not take this medicine if you are currently using floctafenine (a painkiller) or sultopride (a medicine for mental disorders).
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as it can worsen heart problems. Always talk to your doctor before changing your dose or stopping treatment.
  • Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary and advised by your doctor.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness or tiredness, especially at the start of treatment, after a dose increase, or with alcohol. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these symptoms.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia and orthostatic hypotension. Consider interactions , especially with drugs affecting the conduction system of the heart. (updated 20.1.2025)
