How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 10 mg once daily. Some patients may only need 5 mg daily.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush them. Take the tablet at the same time each day, preferably in the morning before, with, or after breakfast.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose is 20 mg. For severe kidney or liver disease, the maximum dose is 10 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Coldness and numbness in hands and feet (fingers, toes, ears, and nose), Raynaud's syndrome, worsening of intermittent claudication (leg pain when walking due to poor circulation).
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Fatigue, tiredness, dizziness, headache (especially at the start of treatment; symptoms are usually mild and disappear within 1-2 weeks).
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation.
RARE
  • Muscle weakness, muscle cramps, and joint pain.
  • General feeling of being unwell.
  • Slow or irregular heartbeat.
  • Worsening of heart failure (a condition where the heart's pumping function is insufficient).
  • Sleep problems, depression.
  • Breathing difficulties (especially in asthma patients or those with previous breathing problems).
  • Dizziness, especially when standing up quickly.
  • Nightmares, hallucinations.
  • Low blood sugar.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen as yellow skin or eyes), hepatitis (liver inflammation).
  • Increased triglyceride levels (certain blood fat levels).
  • Inflammatory skin disease (drug-induced lupus), which disappears after treatment ends.
  • Reduced sexual performance (erectile dysfunction).
  • Hearing loss, runny nose.
  • Reduced tear production (especially if you wear contact lenses).
  • Fainting.
  • This medicine may worsen psoriasis or cause psoriasis-like rash; hair loss; itchy or red eyes.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to bisoprolol or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have acute heart failure, need injections to increase heart muscle contraction, or have had cardiogenic shock.
  • Do not use if you have certain heart conditions causing very slow or irregular heartbeats and do not have a pacemaker.
  • Do not use if you have very poor blood circulation or severe Raynaud's syndrome (e.g., white fingers).
  • Do not use if your blood pressure is very low.

  • Do not use if you have an untreated adrenal gland tumor (phaeochromocytoma).
  • Do not use if you have severe asthma or severe breathing difficulties.
  • Do not use if you have metabolic acidosis (a condition causing too much acid in your blood).
  • If you have a heart condition, do not stop taking this medicine suddenly. The dose must be gradually reduced as instructed by your doctor.
  • If you are having surgery, inform the anaesthetist or other healthcare staff that you are taking Bisoprolol ratiopharm.
  • Stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical attention if you experience rare symptoms such as itching, rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, or difficulty breathing or swallowing (allergic reaction).
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Be especially careful when starting treatment, increasing the dose, changing medication, or consuming alcohol. If you experience visual disturbances, drowsiness, or dizziness, do not drive or operate machinery.
  • This medicine contains lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, discuss with your doctor before taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia and orthostatic hypotension. Consider interactions , especially with drugs affecting the conduction system of the heart. (updated 20.1.2025)
