Bisoprolol Accord is a beta-blocker used to treat heart failure, high blood pressure, and chest pain by slowing the heart rate and improving its pumping function.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start you on 5 mg once a day, and the dose will be gradually increased as needed.

Method

Take the tablet in the morning with water, with or without food. Swallow it whole; do not chew or crush. You can break the tablet in half if needed.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 20 mg once a day, but for heart failure patients, the maximum is 10 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Tiredness, weakness (in chronic heart failure patients), dizziness, headache
  • Coldness or numbness in hands or feet
  • Low blood pressure, especially in heart failure patients
  • Digestive problems, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation
  • Sleep problems
  • Depression
  • Dizziness when standing up
  • Breathing difficulties in patients with asthma or chronic lung disease
  • Muscle weakness and cramps
RARE
  • Hearing problems
  • Allergic rhinitis (stuffy or runny nose)
  • Reduced tear flow (may be a problem if you wear contact lenses)
  • Liver inflammation, which can cause yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
  • Abnormal results in certain blood tests for liver function and fat levels
  • Allergic reactions such as itching, redness, rash; seek immediate medical help for severe swelling of the face, neck, tongue, mouth or throat, or breathing difficulties.
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Nightmares, hallucinations
  • Fainting
  • Eye irritation and redness (conjunctivitis)
  • Hair loss
  • Onset or worsening of psoriasis (a skin condition): psoriasis-like rash

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to bisoprolol fumarate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe asthma.
  • Do not take if you have severe circulation problems in your arms or legs (like Raynaud's syndrome), which can make your fingers and toes numb, white, or blue.
  • Do not take if you have an untreated pheochromocytoma (a rare tumor of the adrenal gland).
  • Do not take if you have metabolic acidosis (too much acid in your blood).

  • Do not take if you have acute heart failure or worsening heart failure that needs intravenous medication to increase heart pumping strength.
  • Do not take if you have a very slow heart rate.
  • Do not take if you have very low blood pressure.
  • Do not take if you have certain heart conditions that cause a very slow or irregular heartbeat.
  • Do not take if you have cardiogenic shock (a serious heart condition causing very low blood pressure and circulatory problems).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia and orthostatic hypotension. Consider interactions , especially with drugs affecting the conduction system of the heart. (updated 20.1.2025)
