How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you your starting dose. The usual daily dose is between 150 mg and 800 mg, depending on your condition.

Method

Take the tablets once a day. Do not break, chew, or crush the tablets. Swallow them whole with water. Take them without food (at least 1 hour before a meal or at bedtime, your doctor will tell you the best time).

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 800 mg, as prescribed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness (which can lead to falls), headache, dry mouth.
  • Feeling sleepy (this may get better as you keep taking the medicine).
  • Weight gain.
  • Unusual muscle movements like shaking, stiffness, or trouble starting to move.
  • Changes in some fat levels in your blood.
  • Fast heartbeat, feeling your heart pound, constipation, upset stomach, feeling weak, swelling in your arms or legs, low blood pressure (making you dizzy or faint when you stand up), high blood pressure.
  • High blood sugar, blurry vision, strange dreams or nightmares, increased hunger, feeling irritable, or problems with speaking.
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or feeling more depressed, trouble breathing, vomiting (especially in older people).
  • Fever, changes in thyroid hormones, fewer white blood cells, higher liver enzyme levels, and higher prolactin hormone levels (which can cause breast swelling, unexpected milk production, or missed periods).
  • Withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking the medicine, such as trouble sleeping, nausea, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, and irritability.
RARE
  • Seizures or fits, allergic skin reactions like hives or swelling of your face and mouth.
  • Restless legs, trouble swallowing, uncontrolled movements of your face or tongue, or sexual problems.
  • Diabetes or worsening diabetes, changes in your heart's electrical activity (seen on an EKG), slower heartbeat, trouble urinating, fainting, a stuffy nose, fewer red blood cells, or low salt levels in your blood.
  • High fever, sweating, very stiff muscles, and feeling very sleepy or weak (called neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), liver inflammation, or a prolonged and painful erection.
  • Breast swelling and unexpected milk production (in both men and women), or menstrual problems.
  • Blood clots (which can cause swelling, pain, and redness in your legs), sleepwalking, talking, or eating in your sleep, low body temperature, or inflammation of the pancreas.
  • Metabolic syndrome (a combination of belly fat, low 'good' cholesterol, high fats in your blood, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar).
  • Infection with fever, flu-like symptoms, and very low white blood cells, a blocked bowel, or increased muscle enzyme levels in your blood.
  • Severe rashes with blisters or red spots on the skin, a very bad allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock) that can cause breathing problems or shock, quick swelling of the skin, face, or throat, or severe blistering of the skin, mouth, and eyes (Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
  • Abnormal hormone secretion that affects how much you urinate, or muscle breakdown and pain.
  • Withdrawal symptoms in newborn babies if their mother took this medicine during pregnancy, stroke, heart muscle disease, heart inflammation, or blood vessel inflammation (often with red or purple spots).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Biquetan if you are allergic to quetiapine or if you are taking certain medicines for HIV, fungal infections, bacterial infections, or depression (nefazodone).
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, low blood pressure, or if you have had a stroke.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver disease, epilepsy, diabetes, low white blood cell count, dementia (especially if elderly), Parkinson's disease, or a history of blood clots.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience fever with severe muscle stiffness, sweating, confusion, uncontrolled movements, severe dizziness, seizures, painful erections, or a fast/irregular heartbeat. Also, seek help if you have thoughts of harming yourself.
