Bioclavid

Bioclavid is an antibiotic that kills bacteria causing infections. It contains two medicines: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children weighing 40 kg or more, take 1 tablet three times a day.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with a glass of water, with food. Take doses evenly, with at least 4 hours between them. Do not take two doses within 1 hour.

Important

Do not use for more than 2 weeks.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea (for adults)
  • Yeast infection (like thrush in mouth, vagina or skin folds)
  • Feeling sick (nausea), especially with high doses. Take with food if you feel sick.
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Diarrhea (for children)
RARE
  • Skin rash and itching
  • Raised, itchy rash (hives)
  • Upset stomach
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Headache
  • Increase in some liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Skin rash with blisters, looking like small targets (dark spot in center, paler area around it, dark ring on edge)
  • Low number of cells that help blood clot (platelets), seen in blood tests
  • Low number of white blood cells (seen in blood tests)
  • Crystals in urine, which can harm kidneys
  • Blistering rash that forms circles with a crust in the middle or looks like a string of pearls
  • Swelling of the lining around the brain and spinal cord (meningitis without infection)
  • Severe widespread skin rashes with blisters and peeling skin, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and private areas
  • Widespread red rash with small pus-filled blisters
  • Red, flaky rash with bumps and blisters under the skin
  • Flu-like symptoms with rash, fever, swollen glands, and strange blood test results
  • Swelling of the liver (hepatitis)
  • Yellow skin or eyes, caused by too much bilirubin in the blood
  • Swelling of the kidney tubes
  • Blood taking longer to clot
  • Feeling overly active
  • Fits (seizures), especially with high doses or kidney problems
  • Black, furry tongue
  • Very low white blood cell count (seen in blood tests)
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia), seen in blood tests

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, penicillin, or any other ingredient in this medicine, or if you've had a severe allergic reaction (like rash or swelling) to other antibiotics.
  • Do not take if you have had liver problems or yellow skin (jaundice) from antibiotics before.
  • Tell your doctor if you have glandular fever.
  • Tell your doctor if you are being treated for liver or kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you do not urinate regularly.

  • This medicine can affect blood and urine test results. Tell your doctor or nurse you are taking Bioclavid if you have these tests.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines you are taking, have taken, or plan to take.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
  • This medicine can make you feel unwell, which might affect your ability to drive or use machines. Do not drive or use machines if you feel unwell.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Increase the dosing interval in severe renal impairment. May potentiate the effect of methotrexate. (updated 6.11.2023)
