How to Use

Dosage

One effervescent tablet once a week.

Method

Dissolve one effervescent tablet in at least half a glass (120 ml) of plain water first thing in the morning after waking up. Do not use mineral water, coffee, tea, juice, or milk. Wait until the fizzing stops and the tablet is completely dissolved. Drink the solution, and then at least 30 ml more of plain water. Stay upright (sitting, standing, or walking) for at least 30 minutes after drinking the solution and before your first meal of the day. Do not lie down. Do not take this medicine at bedtime or before getting up in the morning.

Important

Do not take more than one effervescent tablet per week.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bone, muscle, or joint pain, which can sometimes be severe.
  • Swelling of joints.
  • Stomach pain, uncomfortable feeling in the stomach, burping after eating, constipation, feeling of fullness or bloating in the stomach, diarrhea, gas.
  • Hair loss, itching.
  • Headache, dizziness.
  • Tiredness, swelling of hands or feet.
RARE
  • Nausea, vomiting.
  • Irritation or inflammation of the esophagus (food pipe) or stomach.
  • Black or tar-like stools.
  • Blurred vision, eye pain, or redness of the eyes.
  • Rash, skin redness.
  • Temporary flu-like symptoms, such as muscle pain, general feeling of illness, and sometimes fever, usually at the start of treatment.
  • Taste disturbance.
  • Symptoms of low calcium in the blood, such as muscle cramps or tingling in fingers or around the mouth.
  • Stomach or duodenal ulcers (sometimes severe or bleeding).
  • Narrowing of the esophagus (food pipe).
  • Rash worsened by sunlight.
  • Mouth sores.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to alendronate or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have difficulty swallowing or problems with your esophagus (food pipe).
  • Do not take this medicine if you cannot stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes.
  • Do not take this medicine if your doctor has told you that you have low calcium levels in your blood.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you develop new difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or heartburn.
