How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the correct dose for you. Typically, adults use 2000–2500 ml of solution four times a day (CAPD) or 2000–3000 ml per exchange (APD).

Method

This medicine is given into your abdominal cavity. Make sure the solution is clear and the bag is undamaged. Mix the two chambers of the bag before use and warm the solution to body temperature.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Peritonitis (infection of the abdominal lining), with symptoms like cloudy drained fluid, stomach pain, fever, feeling sick, or rarely blood poisoning.
  • Skin inflammation at the catheter exit site or tunnel, with symptoms like redness, swelling, pain, discharge, or hardening.
  • Abdominal hernia.
  • Problems with the inflow and outflow of dialysis fluid.
  • Feeling of stretching or fullness in the stomach.
  • Shoulder pain.
  • Potassium deficiency (too little potassium).
  • High blood sugar levels.
  • High fat levels in the blood.
  • Weight gain.
RARE
  • Diarrhea.
  • Constipation.
  • Too much calcium (if calcium intake is excessive).
  • Low body fluid, which can lead to rapid weight loss.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Fluid buildup in the body, which can lead to rapid weight gain.
  • Fluid in tissues and lungs.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Breathing difficulties.

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor right away if you have severe low salt levels due to throwing up or diarrhea.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have an infection in your belly (peritonitis), with signs like cloudy drained fluid, stomach pain, fever, feeling sick, or rarely blood poisoning. Show your doctor the used fluid bag.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have very bad stomach pain, a swollen belly, or are throwing up. This could be a sign of a serious, life-threatening complication called encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis.
