How to Use

Dosage

Typically, 2000-2500 ml of solution is used 3-4 times a day, or 2000-3000 ml per exchange overnight with an automated system, as directed by your doctor.

Method

This medicine is used for peritoneal dialysis. The solution comes in a two-chamber bag and must be mixed before use. It is instilled into your abdomen, and the used fluid is drained out. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Important

Your doctor will decide the maximum daily amount based on your needs, typically up to 10 liters for manual exchanges or more for automated systems.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Peritonitis (inflammation of the belly lining) with cloudy drained fluid, belly pain, fever, feeling unwell, or rarely blood infection.
  • Skin infection around the catheter (redness, swelling, pain, discharge, or hardening).
  • Hernia in the belly area.
  • Problems with the flow of dialysis fluid in or out.
  • Feeling of fullness or stretching in the stomach.
  • Shoulder pain.
  • Low potassium levels.
  • High blood sugar.
  • High fat levels in blood.
  • Weight gain.
RARE
  • Diarrhea.
  • Constipation.
  • Breathing problems due to diaphragm rising.
  • Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) with symptoms like belly pain, swollen belly, or vomiting.
  • Too much calcium if calcium intake is excessive.
  • Body fluid loss, seen as quick weight loss.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Fast heart rate.
  • Body fluid buildup, seen as quick weight gain.
  • Fluid in tissues and lungs.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Breathing difficulties.

Important Warnings

  • If you have severe salt imbalance (electrolytes) due to vomiting or diarrhea, tell your doctor right away.
  • If you have peritonitis (inflammation of the lining of your belly), shown by cloudy fluid drained out, belly pain, fever, feeling unwell, or rarely blood poisoning. Show the cloudy fluid bag to your doctor.
  • If you have severe belly pain, a swollen belly, or are vomiting. These could be signs of a serious and potentially fatal problem called encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis.
  • Peritoneal dialysis can cause your body to lose important proteins and water-soluble vitamins. Make sure to eat well or take supplements as advised by your doctor to avoid deficiencies.
